Hi to all
I found a 95 V6 auto as you can see. Its idle for about 5 years. I live in Brazil where few of them was sold.
There are no one more running here. Parts are quite easy to find, but expensive. Need help in the matter of what to check and how.
thanks in advance

Hi cmacedo

Welcome to the club. Looks like a nice car under all that dust! I can't give you a lot of help as V6 auto's are not my thing, but there are plenty of people on here who are very knowledgable about them and I am sure one will be along soon.

Enjoy your XM

Hi..

As far as the engine goes, it must turn over easily.. any problems with the starter which ARE common are a pain to fix as it sits under the front bank, behind the front exhaust down pipe which goes around it to the rear..

It can suffer heat and solinoids start sticking and it can also cause problems with the wiring as it gets VERY hot down there... Ive even found it a problem WITH the heat shield in place..

The engine itself has CHAIN driven cams so theres no worry about them, its not a known thing for them to fail from what Ive heard so far..

If it starts and runs smoothly then so far so good. Car should come up after a moment or two due to time its been sat.. give it a while... you may have to try it a few times to start it up also with sitting.. make sure the oil light is quick to go out...

Car should come up to height, it looks like its been sat in the dry so there so be no problems with rusty seized items.. BUT Im not saying there wont be anything siezed either. When she comes up, I guess there be NO pla in the spheres with it being sat, so they will problably be rock hard.. first thing to change.

In all honesty though, theres not a lot of things to check on the V6, obviously while running make sure it warms through correctly, the thermostat could also be stuckshut, you wont know this as the TOP hose is NOT connected to it thermostat, but instead its on the return from the rad, BELOW the top hose connection to the engine.

The biggest issue, as mentioned above is wiether the starter is good or not.

Once up to height, select a gear, the auto box should take up gear straight away, and smoothly, if you can, go for a drive, she should change gear in a smooth manner with no jerking.. If you can, check the oil in the auto box, if its brown and mucky be cautious, if its near red then thats a good sign. If its in a bad way but drives smoothly enough then I would take the chance, but get the gear oil changed as soon as possible. These auto boxes dont take to being driven on crap / old gearbox fluid.

Good luck and welcome!

I REALLY wouldn't drive the car with those straps wrapped over tight on the strut top.
The head of the suspension strut easily moves within a range bigger than permitted by that!

What wheels are fitted on the car as they don't look familiar?
From the colour coded bumpers, is the car a late model - what year is it out of interest?

hi and welcome.

Another thing to check is the coolant - make sure it's not rusty, and flush the system and replace with fresh anti-freeze, or the steel pipes that run in the Vee of the engine to the heater hoses will rot away (top one seems to be first to go).

I can see why the straps would be there, Brazil is a warm climate, and the warmer humid climates seem to suffer a different strut rubber failure that we see in Europe, check the Aussie/NZ sites, Malaysia has reported this too.

good luck with the new car, nice to hear another one lives on

Hmmm thats an interesting point that AndMcit has pointed out and has ALWAYS gone over my head...

(This doesn't necessarly mean on this car to do now, I personally would take those straps off!)

Anyhow, if you jack up the front of the car up with two jacks on each side so the front wheels are off the ground, then, with the key in the ignition, grasp a wheel and turn from lock to lock, and look at the strut top at the same time... the movment of the sphere top due to the macpherson design has a large movment!! Its quite amazing..

The same goes for Xantias too!!!

Its quite remarkable!!

More info

I'm very familiar about cars, but not Citroen, any help's appreciated
citroenxm
No, possibly not as the car has been stored inside It may possibly not be a problem...

A good battery on the car as well as a jump should help stir.. heavy apperance could be lack of oil circulation...

Keep in there...

Andrew : Opppsss sorry! standard alloys too... they looked so different in the first pic...

Looks a stunning find..

Hi all

I'd put it differently: the torn-rubber failure can happen everywhere (due to running for a prolonged time on flat spheres, and/or, hydractive being stuck in hard mode with owner not realising it, and/or, simply...ageing!). Every time I see a Xantia in Glasgow these days, I turn my eyes elsewhere not to suffer seeing it...pumping its way round sad.gif , riding on its strut-tops rubbers only.... sad.gif .

Additionally, the rust-related failure mainly hits the UK, afaik.

(BTW we really should start a thread in this forum, like they have on Planete-Citroen, where everyone reports instances of broken tops, with photos, will make it easier to discuss the issue -with time they've aggregated 17pages-).

There was a Brazilian XM-owner in Planete-Citroen who was looking to (and finally did) completely deactivate the hard mode because it appears that roads overthere can be very-very bumpy. Hence the "strut arrestors" on our friends car. It seems Brazilians know wink.gif ... These arrestors really look like they "lick" the strut's top, way too close, -although photo could be misleading-.

Notice that this car also has DIRAVI (u can see the centrifugal regulator next to the LHM tank) and the knob for adjusting the straight-line position on the right edge of engine bay. The assistance has to stiffen as speed increases, to the point that, at 100km/h, you really need 2 hands firm on the wheel to be directing the car (unless you are Conan the Barbarian). If steering remains light at higher speed, then it's not working, and it'll rather be the tranfer cable that has snaped/broken from the gearbox to the centrifugal regulator. Or the regulator itself (rarely but does happen).

Make sure to pass it on Hydraflush immediately! 5 years of LHM resting...not good for its veins !!

Beautiful find indeed! Lucky you!!

cheers
George
