Hi, we've got a K reg XM which we got last year. It needs a new drive shaft but we need to get the right one for his car and I understand that it depends on the ABS system. How do we know what type of ABS system it is?
I posted before about the speedo - still not fixed, haven't found anyone who sells them for this car.

Any help/advice much appreciated.

Hi..

The full Reg of the car would help to find out yur engine..

Is it Petrol? It could be either an 8v Turbo (Very Likely) or a Straight 8v which I doubt VERY much, but could be wrong..

Anyway, being K reg it will have Bendix 1 system on it...

Bendix one as it will have the early type sensors with the THIN bodys on the sensors...

Speedo cables can be had from GSF Car parts, or try Citroen Services/AEP Direct...

The 16v engines dodn't come untill later on, M/N reg I think... So I reckon on the 8v Turbo unit.. (Unless its diesel)

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply. It's a petrol XM Prestige and the registration is K135 LGJ.
Be great if you could find out - I've tried but don't really know where to go.

Cheers

Hi Caroline

Would you believe that the critical issue is just the shape of the teeth on the ABS ring on the drive shaft. Citroen changed the Bendix ABS design for the XM at RP 5028 (11 Feb 1991) and some of the components can be mixed when you do repairs but not all. The correct drive shafts must be used for XM's with the later type Bendix ABS. The only difference between the two types of drive shaft is the shape of the little teeth on the ABS ring as both types have the same number of teeth. They have to be square in shape on the later drive shafts. You should find your cars RP number if you open the front passenger door and look on the frame between the door hinges. The chances are that only the later type of drive shaft is available anyway as Citroen stopped making the early type when they changed over. They could do this because the new type shaft works the older type of ABS. To be sure about the engine/model type then either post the VIN number for one of us to identify or compare your cars engine with the coloured drawings in the owners manual.

John, thanks for your reply. Sounds complicated! I do have the number from the door but I'm not sure what I can do with that number.
Many thanks one and all
Ciaran
Hi Caroline,

The RP number from the door will tell us the exact day the car left the factory, making it a bit easier to work out which parts you require, especially where something like ABS is concerned as it can change so much from one iteration to the next, and sometimes mere days difference in production date can be significant.

If you post the RP number here we should be able to help further.

Thanks Ciaran

The number is 5702. If you are able to give me any info about this particular car it would be much appreciated.

She WILL be 8v, but either Turbo or straight Petrol.,

It WILL also be CABLE speedo, electronic speedo didn't come untill the NEW dash - which is around 1995 eira...

You don't have the VIN number handy do you?
(Starts VF -------------) and is stamped on a silver plate inside the bonnet slam panel, and on the wing on some cars.

The reason I ask is we can possibly put it into Citroens service site and it can lookup the cars details, it works in some instances at least.

Ah no I don't have that but I will see if my husband can let me know.

Thanks again - much appreciated
Ciaran
No probs. If he can't get the number easily, tell him to snap a a picture of the engine with his phone, upload it here and we'll tell you right away whether its the turbo or N/A 8v.....

Hi Caroline

Your RP is almost 700 more than the cut over date and RP that I quoted. That means your car was made nearly 2 years after Citroen changed the design of the Bendix ABS. All currently available drive shafts will be to this design so not the concern I thought it was. We now need to sort out the type of gear box that the drive shafts have to fit into. This is why we are all trying to identify the car and engine type for sure. For a BE3/5 box (engine types XU102C, XU10M, XU10J2/BE3 & XUD11A) the Citroen part number is 3272.90 for the left shaft and 3273.H8 for the right shaft. For the ME5T manual box and the 4HP18 auto box (engine types ZPJ, ZPJ4, XU10J2/4HP18, XUD11ATE & XU10JTE the Citroen part number is 3272.N0 for the left shaft and 3272.T6 for the right shaft. Once we have the VIN or the photo of the engine bay some one will be along here to say which of the engine/gear box combinations your car has.

Thanks for your help (not that I understood). We will post the VN number.

Once we've done that are you able to tell me what type of ABS system the car has?

Cheers again

My K reg 1993 V6 12v is RP number 5719...

She has the ABS system with the EARLYER type sensors fitted John, with the THIN bodys of the sensors, NOT the Fatter bodys....

So Ib be quite sure it has EARLY Bendix with lower Resitance Sensors...
