Leaky Caliper

Hi all, anyone here ever had lhm leaking from the rubber "boot" that covers the parking brake mechanism on the front brake calipers ? one of mine is doing it and i wondered if anyone had any advice before I started to pull it apart.

Hi Colin,

Never seen that particular fault before. However there is a shaft which comes out the back side of the caliper agianst which the parking brake mechanism acts. Since the hydraulic pressure must surround that shaft then it must, by defiinition have seals, probably o-rings.

According to Citroen-Sevice you can get a repair kit which seems to contain all of the required seals. Taking the caliper apart is not too difficult but a few photographs during the disassembly would help with the reassembly.

The caliper repair kits arrived today complete with fully comprehensive instructions , hurrah ! - in French anyone here done this before or have the relevant instructions in English ?
As usual, the Haynes and Peter Russek books of fun are useless, both saying that special tools are required and the job should be entrusted to main dealers

thats right dont loose your time trying to rebuild the caliper,its not easy and its not will sucssed.
try find used one in good shape or buy a new one (mybe a lot of money)

Too late, I've got the rebuild kits now which I was told "will not be cheap. Since I have full use of a toolroom I'm sure I can find a way

Hi colin the procedure is as follows:-
1/ remove caliper from the car,
2/ unwind the piston as far as it will go then insert a bit of wood 10mm thick between the piston and caliper and carefully blow the piston out with compressed air,
3/ pull the boot covering the handbrake lever back and remove the small circlip from the end of the shaft,
4/ looking down on the caliper from the h/brake end there is the plunger that screws ito the piston around this are 5 cup springs these need compressing then the h/brake lever /spring and small follower can be removed,
5/ release the the plunger cup springs and withdraw the plunger,
6/ clean everything spotless and remove the old seals,

rebuilding is the reverse of the dissassembly the seals etc want coating with lhm before assembly the only hard part is getting the piston started on the threads

There's always a way, i havent seen a special tool yet that cant be replaced by a large flat bladed screwdriver and/or a hammer Colin
