Hello fellow members, I'm a new member of this forum and a new owner of a '98 XM 2.0 Auto SX.

I bought it from a gentlemen who had it from new and had it dealer serviced throughout and it seems that no expense had been spared on the vehicles mainternance.

Indeed, the XM performs faultlessly!

I'm hoping that, although I cant afford dealer prices, I will be able to keep the car in good fettle for the future.

I intend to tow our caravan with the XM, anyone had experience of this with a 2.0 auto? Our van is 1150kgs max.

I'm still working out my mpg with this car, but it seems very good up til now, I'll keep you posted.

Hi there... Welocme to the mad house..

I run a 3 litre V6 auto which does tow well.. Mines a 1992 though with the "older" auto box - which is to be honest CRAP! It can not decide which gear to use!!

I beleve you should have the auto adaptive box from '97 onwards which is better and switchable?? If so well done..

However I wouldn't like to use a 2.0 to tow.. Is it a 16v unit? I guess it is which is better then 8v.

The ultimate of course whould have been a diesel - either 2.1 or 2.5, both are EXCELLENT!

Happy motoring

Hi Pilsbury,

I used to run an elderly 2.0SEi (1990) which I used to tow our 'van. Not quite as big as yours, about 1000kg. Although not the fastest thing on the road it would wind slowly up to the towing maximum - and above if you were so inclined. The fuel consumption took a bit of a hit when towing, usually about 21mpg. Odd thing about the auto adaptive gearbox, it is sometimes very reluctant to change into top when towing but you can force it by switching to "snow" mode, just remember to switch back to normal if you come to a stop, it doesn't like starting off in second with a load on the back!

Hi guys, thanks for the greetings and your opinions on my car. I'm not a fast driver when it comes to towing, just dont see the point. As to the 21 mpg, its 50% better, almost, than my Range Rover used to be so.............!

Sorry its taken so long to reply, I work shift and I've been on lates this week ph34r.gif
