I'm new. And perhaps stupid.
I already have a wonderful 1997 VSX Turbo which makes me very happy indeed.
Needing, as I do, another car, I am on the verge of purchasing a black 1993 3.0 V6 SEi which is on 128k from Danny at Wolsey House. It has had absolutely tons spent on it and it's a lovely tight ride but will it make my life a misery? I'm no DIY-er and will have to rely on Danny to keep it shipshape.
Do I twist or stick? I have heard so many horror stories about V6s over the weekend that I'm close to changing my mind.
Advice would be nice.

are you buying with your heart or with your head?
You know the V6 is right!!

"Heart or head?"
Just the sort of answer to strike fear into my heart.
I guess, given the fact I'm even considering buying one of these albatrosses is a clear sign that I do not know my arse from my elbow never mind my heart from my head.....

Hi Paolo
I have had about 12 XM's over the last few years and ended up hooked on 2.5TD's.
Nearly a year ago I bought a V6 Auto Exclusive with 163k on the clock. The intention was to scrap it for the interior as my 2.5's are only VSX's. The drive home changed my mind and we have kept it on the road and enjoy driving the car.
Normally XM's are so depreciated that the purchase cost is very low in comparision with other cars but you risk paying the difference in spares and repairs.
W H price their XM's rather high but if they are offering selected, up together cars with a good long warranty period provided by them then they could still be good value. A V6 XM is a great car to drive. Keep going back for a test drive it could well help you decide one way or the other. Make sure you try a smaller engined XM to know why you really want a V6. Have a care on the little single track roads leading to Dannys yard.
Not an easy decision but it has to be yours I am afraid.

Thanks, I already have a VSX which is pretty nifty and is in excellent nick and will be with me for a while but I need a second car and the V6 is something I've hankered after for ages. Later model V6s seem to be extremely rare so I'm tempted by the s1 despite all the apparent problems.
I have driven it and it's really tight and sharp - it's a more focused experience than the VSX.
I guess what I'm hoping is that whatever major needed to be fixed has already been fixed (it's had a new gearbox for example and all the electrics work) and that I will just need pretty thorough services every 6k or so.
Danny offers just a 3 month warranty, unfortunately.

I have to agree, i bought CitroenXM's V6 off him. It started life as an automatic and was converted to a manual, and it is fantastic to drive.
It is a series 1 with the 90 degree Vee, it is quick, and it is an absolute pleasure to drive.

Hi Paolo
128K V6 auto? Tricky since the series 1 autos don't have a life expectancy greater than that mark normally. Having said that. The rest of the V6 is fairly bomb proof. Otherwise it's just normal series 1 stuff. Just make sure that the electrics are working OK.
Cheers

Thanks Tony but when you say the V6 autos don't usually have a life expectancy of more than 128k what do you mean?
The engine? The gearbox........?

Hi Paolo99,
He will mean the gearbox I guess. The Peugoet / Citroen 4 speed autos in early cars are NOT a bomb proof unit.
Engines are ok too, check the antifreeze / rust inhibtor mixture.. If the coolant is Brown FORGET it as heads MAY need attention sooner or later.
Water must be PERFECTLY clear. Mine, a 1993 V6 Auto SEi, runs at around 90 deg C on the water temp display. This is apparently quite normal.
GO FOR IT!! I've had 3 now, previously one G reg 2.0 i N/a. It was ok, but not half as much fun as V6... Lovly noise on V6 too they GROWWWWEL

Yeah, but the gearbox has been replaced. As has almost everything else. The electrics all work too which is reassuring.
Now, if I could only get hold of Danny......

if the autobox has been replaced and all of the electrics work, then go for it!!
The V6 is a lovely car, quick and smooth!!

The gearbox has been replaced -- by what? A NEW box or one off another with a lot of miles under its belt? Caveat Emptor. Brian
