Full Version Front Strut Rubber Return Pipe

The Front Left Suspension strut return pipe split suddenly and I could not find any spares today.

The main Citroen dealer in Redhill said they are no longer available. They gave me the tel. No. of an independant specialist but the staff are not available until next week.

The rubber pipe broke about 40mm from the chassis end of the rubber tube and so I pushed the remainder onto the 4.5mm metal pipe. It has lots of cracks and should be replaced as soon as possible.

I am hoping this will work for a few days until I can find a better solution.
I am thinking of cutting the old pipe near the strut and inserting a brass straight connector into it.
I can then push a new rubber tube onto it and push the other end onto the chassis 4.5mm metal pipe.

I have a 1996 2L turbo petrol estate.
I was told that the part number is 5270EP but I have seen a photo of a similar pipe marked 95 050 399.

Ideally I would like two pipes, one for each front strut. Are they identical?

Many thanks,
Brendan

Hi Brendan

Try a competent Citroen dealer!!!

The pipes and clips are also used on C5's under the same part numbers.
So they should be current stock available items.

Have a look at ebay item 171056008041.
Hallidays in Derry NI are selling half a dozen pipes and clips at around £25 each posted.
Ring them and make an offer.
I have only dealt with them over the phone but they have always been very helpful.

If all else fails GSF sell them. Cheaper too at £19.56 (clip + hose) if you can collect locally.

Hi Paul,

Did you get mates rates?!

Citroen Service quote:

95050399 Leak back hose £15.46
96127591 Collar £ 5.29

Total £20.75 (25% inflation since Norman bought his in 2010)

It's not essential to buy the collar of course and a decent quality tie wrap will do just as well if the old collar cannot be fully re-used.

I have had several instances of pipe failure due to cracking and so far have managed just by chopping off the old perished bit and splicing in a new piece of small bore fuel hose - less hassle than disturbing the strut connection.

Hi Ken,

No, it was not my local dealer either... they didn't have them in stock and they came from head quarters stock (likely UK) as they arrived next day..

Even Citroen Service shows them as still available..

I changed the return hose and it was easier than I expected.

I bought a 60 - 80mm jubilee clip and used this to compress the large end of the return hose where it is clamped to the strut tube.

This reduced the pressure in the stainless steel clip and I could then unclip it without damaging it.

I used the jubilee clip to compress the new hose and then used a large nail removing 'pincers' to re-attach the original clip. It has to be the type of pincers that has the chamfer on the inside and have jaws that open up to about 27mm.

The next time I will use two jubilee clips (above and below the original clip) to compress a small bar of steel against the large end of the hose. That should make the job less fiddly.

I bought the hose from Masters in Beckenham.
Thanks for your advice.
