Hi all,

By now you will have received a spam PM from a member called "viagra" who is already no more. I can only apologise for this. He registered at 19.30 and by 19.35 had sent 1250 PMs. I didn't catch it until 19.46.

The captcha during registration seems to stop the bots quite well but there's nothing that can distinguish between a real Xm owner and a spammer when its a human being doing it.

Security versus freedom is an old song. Its always hard to strike a balance. The only step I have available to me now is to personally vet each and every registration. Until now I have resisted doing that both because of the additional workload and, to be honest, we've never needed it before. I will monitor it but if it happens again I'll need to step up the security another level.

in the meantime I'll put a restriction on the number of PMs a member can send in any 24 hour period.

Apologies again

I did get the spam mail - and a notification in my personal mail that I had a new PM waiting.

Thats the reason to peep in here, as its been quite a while since last time rolleyes.gif

No one would blame you Norrie as these spammers are all over the web, being a real nuisance at times.

See you around, cheers mate smile.gif

Hi Norrie,

As Anders said don't worry about it. Still I wonder if Viagra would help a tired XM rise up easier....

Keep up the good work Noz.

Steve.

So Viagra isn't a new Italian XM owner? Shame.
It simply isn't a problem as far as I'm concerned.

Hi Dean,

The original spammer used the username of "viagra". fredo62 is a new member who joined this morning and judging by his first post in the Introductions section he seems genuine. What makes you think that fredo62 was the viagra spammer? What was wrong with his PM?

Cheers

Hi Noz

He sent me a PM titled 'buy viagra now' or something similar so i didnt bother opening just deleted, thought you should know, we had a similar thing happen on .uk a while back and they looked like genuine members but too genuine if you know what i mean, they listed , home country's and interests etc in their profiles and we were having to remove probably 3 or 4 a day at one point.
Just thought i would let you know wink.gif

I wonder if he actually has an XM? They normally teach you to be tolerant.
