I seem to have acquired a couple more XM, sight unseen. Both are 2.1 SD in need of help.

The Mandarin one needs general fettling and has a leaking brake doseur valve, the Cobalt one needs a head gasket and other work.
The mandarin one has been left standing for three years, the Cobalt one for seven years.

The cobalt one during a block test for HG leakage. Note the colour of the dye has changed to green from blue...and all those bubbles.... biggrin.gif

I've washed them both to get the moss off and had a look under the Cobalt one today and it's in really good shape.
One thing I looked for was that all four jacking points are straight with no rust on the body at all and only a very small patch underneath where the underseal is flaked off.

The Mandarin one isn't as pretty, but other than the leaking doseur valve and completely seized wipers and sunroof seems like a go-er.
The Cobalt one also had seized roof, height selection control (which I've now broken) and wipers, but the wipers were easier to free off. I had to lever the mechanism with a crowbar with the wipers on and lubricated on the Mandarin one. All done now though.

The neighbours think I've flipped..!! rolleyes.gif

Ah, the ones from ebay ... I wondered if someone would buy those.

They look like they could be very good cars, especially the blue one, that looks very tidy. What are your plans for them?
Dieselman
Umm..yes I bought them... biggrin.gif They were deliverd last Thursday evening.

These cars were built June 1992, 487 cars and 13 days apart, both have Bosch pumps, one a plastic manifold and no EGR, one with metal manifold and EGR, one has a black dash, one grey.
They were registered exactly one month apart, August and September '92.

The future...

The Mandarin one is automatic and has 160k miles, but apparently a new auto box about 35k miles ago. I believe that as it engages gears very well.
I don't really want to keep this car as I already have a nice Mandarin one so once the doseur valve is sorted (note the leaking LHM under the mudflap), I will be having a good look around and getting it tested and moved on.

The Cobalt one is manual, so suits what I want better, so is likely to stay with me once the HG is done and an MOT in place.
Both cars start fantastically well and are smooth, both need bits of paintwork and fettling.

Will,

It wont be the actual doser valve, it will be the pivot point on the brake pedal lever that has siezed, not a bad job to release, scuttle trims are not welded to the screens like the Xantias...

Let me know when the manderin is ready... and what you may want for her.

The NON EGR heads are a doddle to do from what I remember on mine..the others are a fiddle...

Ive also got a spare manderin to do mine up..

Im impressed.. nice one. So you'll keep TWO XM;'s then?? They get addictive you know, we cant seem to keep one car only.. notice the average signiture, most of us have two or more... tongue.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

It is the doseur leaking. The brakes and suspension work OK, it's just peeing LHM out from the dosuer. I've inspected it already, hence the scuttle trim is off.

Unfortunately the one that wants the HG is the one with EGR... LOL.. Having done one without, I'm not bothered about that.

I'm not saying that collecting XM is addictive, but I nearly went for that estate with no drive as well... laugh.gif In some respects that would've suited what I need better...it was low mileage as well..

I had that on an early XM SED I had, which my landlord has now, luckilly with her, it was a return pipe... theres TWO return outlets go to a special Y rubber return... I cut it back, re fitted it and all been well for the last 4 years..

A grey dash RHD Xm Will!?!? You'll have to share pictures of that. I have only seen a LHD car with a grey dash, and only a couple of cars as well.

Very nice. I had an SX hatch once, not enough room in it, I like the heater arrangement though.

My white estate has a leaking head gasket but I have run it for the last 5000 miles or so with the filler cap loose, it doesn't loose water if you do that, unless its leaking very badly.

It's not light grey, but just a bit lighter than the full black dash. I could be mistaken, but I've noticed that before. You have to be careful when selecting heater knobs.

I'll share pictures when it doesn't look like a pig pen.. rolleyes.gif

It's leaking and loses water once it gets hot.

Nice work!

Congratulations on having such good taste dieselman, a pair of mk1 s.I take it as a plus point with cars being laid up for a few year, like my 2.1td auto,I learnt from the previous owners brother that it had been laid up for four years, that's good news to me as the car is in very good shape and less miles covered than it might have done.
When i look at pictures of my first xm ,it was a silver .2.1 manual hatch and it served us really well,I regret letting it go.I think the mk 1s look miles better than the mk2s.
