Hello all ...

I just bought a lovely S1 on e-bay. Yes, I had a small idea of what I was letting myself in for, because I have owned three Citroens previously ... two CX and one GS.
I always fancied an XM, and now I have one ....

But I did not expect to find the dipped beam u/s on the way home once it got dark!

This car looks utterly gorgeous. Hardly a chip anywhere, and the interior is very nice, though it badly needs a good valeting. And I got it for a song - or rather for half a verse of a song - and it looks wonderful. However, the specification was not entirely "as advertised" .... And there are some problems that were not stated, too.

Problems so far:

THe dipped beam ....
One window not working ...
Strange and intrusive noise that starts at around 35mpk, stops on the over run and vanishes over 60mph... Similar sound to a wheel bearing. Not yet sure where it comes from, as I am pretty deaf!
Some body ratltles and a thumping from the suspension
And the door locks seem to be siezed.

Already on this forum I have found possible help for the lamps and locks issues.

I have an ancient BMW 5 series three litre V8, and this has spoiled me. In comparison, the XM seems noisy and underpowered. I was thinking of selling the Beemer, but I have changed my mind. I now think I will keep it for serious motoring, and run the XM for "fun and pleasure"! Or perhaps cure all the faults and sell it on.

The lights issue has been solved, exactly as advertised here on this invaluable forum, and the car now has 12.5 months MOT ...

Astonishingly, the rear electriv window (which the vendor assured me was held up by a block of wood!) started working after my engineer, Ray, had merely LOOKED at the car! It's the 'fluence! A miracle!

Any suggestions about my noises will be gratefully received....!

Are you going to let us in to what model and spec you have bought?? Or have I missed your description elsewhere....

Sorry if I have .. welcome.. You should have waited for a V6 or a 2.0litre Petrol Turbo, they are some what brisk, especially the V6..

Welcome

Oh! Sorry! Only just spotted this post:

My XM is not at all brisk, though it does wind itself up to a good speed. It is a two litre non turbo petrol. The model is called "prestige"... but it is not quite what I expected after the CX prestige I once owned, which was "top of the range". This one isn't ... although it does have a nice black leather interior and climate control.

I had intended to get rid of my five series V8 BMW, but I decided to keep it. It is far quieter, much smoother, and - dare I say it? - it has a more comfortable ride than the XM ...... huh.gif

It may be false memory syndrome, but my three CXs are remembered as having a more comfortable ride and better seating.

Still, I am not complaining. I am very fond of my new XM, but maybe I will look out for one with a bit more poke next time.

Welcome to the club

Any sort of XM is a very comfortable roomy car but I favour the diesels, I am on my 4th now, plenty of go and very good economy.

Your noise that sounds like a wheel bearing probably is, quite a common fault, I have the same on mine but you only usually hear it at around 30 mph so havn't bothered to change it yet.

Your comments re the BMW interested me, as after 20 or more years of hydropnumatic Citroens, I am thinking of getting one (sorry folks, please dont delete my mail!) Its not that I think any less of the XMs, its just that it seems to be impossible to get a late 2.1 td manual estate. The BMW estate is not nearly so roomy and I find it difficult to believe that it rides as well, but it does have a lot going for it, not the least, is that it is easier to work on! I shant be getting one for a few months, or certainly until I have tried and tested one to see if it really is as good as the XM, but when I do I will hand in my official resignation sad.gif

I don't suppose ALL BMWs are the same, any more than are all XMs. I realise, now, that my XM is probably one of the noisiest, with a two litre four-pot engine thrashing away under the lid.

The BMW I have is a V8 three-litre five series saloon, the 530i. "L" reg, so getting on a bit, but it is very comfortable, very fast, very quick and very quiet, and has given me absolutely no headaches in two years of ownership. In fact, it drives like new at over 150,000 miles.

You pay a penalty for all this every time you stop for fuel, but not a huge one. The overall consumption is around 23 mpg, rising to 27 on a run.

As far as the ride is concerned, I can only say that my BMW rides better than my Citroen. This is not all that surprising, when you consider that other makers have had around sixty years to equal or surpass the citroen hydraulic suspension. Nothing stands still.

I bought the XM because I have always wanted one, and love the looks of the car and the practicality of an enormous hatchback. I intended to sell the BMW and run the XM as our sole car, but She Who Must Be Obeyed insists that we keep it, and I have to admit she is right. So the XM is my toy, and hard to justify, and we shall use the BMW when we want to go anywhere without a load in the back.

Why not keep your XM as a toy? biggrin.gif

Thats probably what I will do if I cant get a good price for it. I have done a lot of work on it this year and it has been running faultlessly for the last 6 months or so, unusual for an XM!

Yes, the small petrol ones are noiser, my diesel is geared to about 28 mph per 1000 rpm so at 70 mph the engine is only turning at about 2,400 rpm, which makes it quiet.

The BMW I am looking at is the 530 D Touring which is about 40-50 mpg and 140 mph! not that I want to go that fast, but the acceleration is good.
