Hi Noz, and all else who may be able to help!
After my exhaust broke and was renewed it started to rattle again, especially on starting and stopping the engine, I decided it just had to be one or two of the mounts. I was under it today and suspect the rear lower one, the one where the right drive shaft goes through the bracket. Has anyone on the forum renewed this in situ? That is without removing the bracket? I have the buhing already from AEP ( I was buying a 2.1 belt tensioner anyway)
I was thinking of making a bridge and draw it out with a long bolt, and I think I have enough room to the left side, would this work? I don't fancy removing the shaft as all looks well with that just now and an MOT is due next month and I'ld rather not disturb it when it is in good nick. Your help would be appreciated.
I'll add a file of the parts numbers 6 is the flexible bush, 2 is the bracket and 12 is the yoke.
Bob.
PS the attachment might not be loading? Bob.

Hi Bob,
Sorry, I don't know the 2.1 lump very well. I take it you're talking about the engine mounts? I presume the mid shaft bearing on the drive-shaft shares the bracket with the engine mount?
Certainly on the 2.5 the bracket is easily removed once the drive shaft is withdrawn. Withdrawing the drive-shaft isn't too bad. Is removing the bracket on a 2.5 so bad?
If I've remembered the right Bob you're not to far away from me. If I'm right, you're welcome to bring the car up for a look and we can assess it from there. Let me know if that's any use to you.
cheers

Hi Noz,
Yes, I live close by, in Falkirk, I'll be busy for the next week but will take you up on that offer as soon as possible. I've had a look at it and though I didn't measure it I'm sure there's enough room to make a bridge puller and pull the bush out without removing the shaft or the bracket, I have a new bush, but haven't invented the bridge yet!
Regards.
Bob.

Hi Bob
I've had problems with rattling on a couple of mine and on both its been due to the centre box twisting the pipe round under its own weight on the joint between the front and centre boxes, because the normal clamps don't seem strong enough.
I did get hold of a couple of super heavy clamps or you could fit two normal ones or once you have the pipe in position drill a small hole through both pipes and fit a self tapper.
Noz
Nice to see you back in harness again, I seem to have a problem with notification of replies and I can't access the 'my controls' feature.

Hi Peter,
I got the car on ramps and as high as it go onto axle stands and had a good look at everything and it all seemed okay except not a lot of clearance at the very end of the exhaust tail pipe, it was close to a part of the chassis. I got out my small angle grinder and cut a vee into the pipe 4" from the end and then bent it down and away from the chassis, problem solved! But, why did the last new one break just at the weld onto the front silencer.
I looked at the lower rubber engine mount and when I make a bridge I hope to pull the old bush and fit a new one I bought for £10.00. There is plenty of room to do it.
Regards.
Bob.

Hi Peter,
Thanks, its good to be back and have the time to devote to the forum again. I am aware of most of the issues still remaining but there's almost no point in trying to fix the problems with the existing forum software. It is past its sell by date. It is not compatible with SQL5. I am in the process of putting together a plan to migrate to new software which is compatible. Please bear with me.
Cheers

OK Noz, you're doing a good job, we won't press you
Bob
I have had problems with several systems not fitting properly and often have to bend the fixings to suit. I have been buying some of the 'surplus' 2.1 systems off ebay, very cheap, but practically every box I get is slightly different.

Bob
I had an exhaust rattle after renewing the rear box on my 2.1TD. It turned out that the tailpipe was sitting fairly close to one of the towbar bracket plates. Trimming a small corner piece off the bracket with the angle grinder cured the rattle.
