No the symptoms here point to the universal swivel being stiff as Graeme cites;
I've seen it on Xm's as well as Xantiae. Get some chain lube spray on it
and work it back forward with the front wheels off the floor - should sort it.

Thanks guys, that actually makes sense, as I can feel a little creakiness through the column when its in those stiff positions.
Silly question, but where may the swivel joint be accessed? I'm presuming its not the rubber disc thing with bolts in it?

I think we've hijacked the thread 
Ciarán, It's going to be under the dashboard somewhere so might involve some upside down head in the foot well kind of acrobatics! On my Xantia you could certainly see one of the shaft joints by a casual look under the dash.
You might find it needs some panels removed from under the steering column but needs to be confirmed - you might be lucky and it's visible from looking up under the dash, you could use a pair of aerosol cans, start with WD-40 on the joint and wait 5 mins, give a second dose on each then get some spray grease and spray that on the joints making sure it gets into the actual spindles of the universal joints. Then just roll the steering from lock to lock a few times to work it.
While you're down there you should lube up the pedal pivots too - the Xm brake pedal linkage to the doseur valve has a pivot that can stick causing some brake drag.

The steering universal lives out on the engine bay side of the bulkhead and just runs a square
bar through a rubber grommet. It has two sets of swivels like a socket set ratcket swivel which
is why you can feel stiffness in different orientations. The steering column undoes another swivel
off the square bar by undoing one bolt and the rack end has another pair of bolts.
Access is abysmal!! That's why I'd suggest spraying some grease first!!
