Full Version 2.5 Td Rattle
I've just had the head gasket repaired and the engine runs wonderfully now BUT on idle there is a rattling noise from, I think, one of the alternator belt pulleys. I was told the alternator bolt had sheared and I wonder if this has caused the problem. The noise disappears when I put my foot on the gas. I wonder if anyone knows where I can get one of these pulleys from as they seem to be extremely expensive! Also the garage have disconnected the battery and I don't have the radio code ....... do I have to contact Citroen or is there another way?

You need to look in the self help files there are some radio decode programs
It might work its worth a try if not Citroen can give it to you by the chassis number
The pullies are not cheap to buy but someone will have one on a scrap engine
For a new one I think its about £60 + vat if I remember correct
If you have no luck with the radio you will get the software on Ebay around £5-£10

If you have a set of radio release loops then it might just be worth sliding the radio out just enough to look at the labels on the case. I have found that some dealers/owners write the code on the radio. You will need to do this anyway to get the serial numbers of the radio for the decoding programmes.
If anyone knows of a decoding programme for the Phillips radios in a MK2 XM the please post details.
If you find a 2.5 in a scrap yard with and engine parts on it, let alone servicable ones you will be doing well. I seem to recall Noz has written up about 2.5 belt tension pulleys and sourcing under one of the sections of this web site.

If your car has AC, you'll have an auto tensioner as well as a normal one. The rattling can be caused by two different things. The auto tensioner has a big spring-like thing on it, if this is worn (no way to tell though
) it will cause a rattling sound. The tensioner roll itself is mounted on a bracket with a pivoting point in the middle, the tensioner on one arm and the spring bit attaches to the other arm, the second reason for rattling is the bearing at the pivoting point. Take the assembly off the car (one bolt in the centre of the pivoting point) and check if the bearing has any play.
