Last chance to swap if anybody can tell me if it can be safely done. I suppose the stuff is glued.
On my second XM this trim (I suppose painted or anodised Al) is fading and doesn't look so nice anymore. On my old one to be scrapped it is perfect but I have not dared to put the screwdriver on it. Can it be removed without pain?

Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer, but if the car is to be scrapped what do you have to lose? Or are you scrapping it yourself?

The black trim has a hook to fit over the outer edge of the door frame. The inner edge is just turned in slightly towards the window glass. It fixes to the door frame with a strip of double sided tape about 10mm wide. This tape strip is parallel to the glass edge about 10mm in. If you use a thin bladed paint stripper you can work this in and cut the tape without kinking the thin black cover. First though you will need to release the top and bottom rubber cover strips that also lock the trim in place. On the inside of the door by the edge you will see that each of these rubbers is fixed with a black plastic domed nut. Remove these nuts and push the bolt thread through the door. Now carefully peel each of the rubbers back clear of the black trim. Now use the thin blade to cut the sticky tape strip. Now the black trim can be unhooked from the door frame. Start at the bottom as the top of the black trim has a little locating tongue that slots into a hole in the door frame.
