My kind of auction ...........where is it? Am I the only one here that actually likes it for being an S2 car? And believe it or not.......I'd prefer it with an auto box. |
Hi Minijet.
Almost any of the big auctions that is all you will look to pay for an XM, unless you are unlucky and get a couple of private enthusiasts in a bidding war over a minter.
You may recall the very late estate that was touted on Ebay in the Manchester area recently; if memory serves, that made £320, maybe £350 at BCA. I looked at a dog of a 2.5 estate at Newport; tad over £100 I think. Reality is that to the motor trade, they are big, old and very undesirable --- which is great news for us.
Personally, I think there are still far too many (relatively) about to justify the 'collector' price tags some dealers seem to be aiming at.
My last set of prices for those I've had recently were ----
2.1 auto Exclusive '95. Black. Very nice, modest miles,
Bought £440 no MOT abt. 2 years ago.
Sold £800 tested etc, abt. 15 mths ago
2.1 SX hatch, 95. Bought as 'bitzer' abt. 18 mths ago £120.
Too good to break; did head gasket, sold £250 (I think) (On ebay again at the moment -- see my note in the 'available section)
2.5 Estate '96. Aircon, Full test and taxed. 112k miles. £1250, just over 12 months ago
2.5 Estate, '97 leather, aircon, no tax or test, some modest remedials required; £650 about three weeks ago. Went straight through test and I'll probably have laid out more time than cash to get it fully sorted.
Altogether I just don't think the real prices most XMs achieve lend any weight yet to the hefty tags some vendors are placing on them.
Incidentally, I'm right with you on the S2. (Puts tin hat on ) Much, much better put together than the S1, quieter, smoother etc. Can't speak for the V6, never had any.
Mike.

Hi Minijet
I like it because of the colour, the trim and that it is a Mk2. Does not make it anywhere near good value of course. My last 96 V6 excl had a slightly higher mileage, 120k, had not been valeted, has lasted a bit over 2 years and cost £500. Keep looking and you will come across better value XM's. There are plenty more Mk2's to come.

I paid £420 I Think for my 1993 S1.5 V6 SEi about 3 years ago...
Still goes strong, and WILL take me anywhere!! And ABSOLUTLY everything still works! Even Air con, cruise, elec arm rest, so on so on so on...

well i think this thread always comes up whenever an over/optimisticly priced car comes up for sale and as has been mentioned, it depends why you want an xm, but i think with good examples becoming rarer and there being less and less xms around the price will end up rising. Current scrap prices have already seen an end to the £100 'bargain car' and with more people buying them because of the vehicles individuality and increasing rarity you can guarantee the days of cheap xm's are numbered.
So Andmcit, your sitting on a potential fortune

If only!!
It's interesting to see a general feeling that the higher diesel cost is levelling
the difference in running costs between petrol and TD models too as I do have
a load of 'em!!
Mind, there are still £100 bargains out there as nobody wants to spend any
money at the moment; just bought a Xantia TD P plate for just over 100quid
and it's quite good actually...

Hi Minijet
Sometime in the next few days the V6 will hopefully make a one way trip to the Isle of Anglesey loaded with XM bits I want to be shot off. This will ensure that a few other XM's get a life extension. The wheels and interior etc will grace one of the 2.5's.
Keep looking for your bargin. I remain convinced that there are still many Mk2's that owners will replace and be told by the Citroen dealer their XM is worthless. Only Mk1's are just about becoming collectors items and there are far to many of them for all to survive. XM's are still being well used. Collectors cars are money pits that you are afraid to drive very much in case you devalue them.

£100 quid for a xantia!!! you could drive it into the scrapyard and walk out with more than that for it now!!!
Xmexc, When i got mine it had 45k on it and i must admit to start with i was worried about putting the mls on it but now i dont bother about it at all. If i came to buy another i would not bother about the millage either, in my experience a car of that sort of age that hasn't been used much will probably just be more of a money pit with perished hoses and the like than a high miler that's been regularly maintained. And tbh i would wait for one to come up for sale here where the owner has posted past problems and fixes etc etc and you know the thing has been used and more importantly regularly maintained than one that has sat on the drive barely being used for years.
That exclusive is a cracking looking car though, love the colour, dont like the lacquered engine though, took me ages to get the lacquer of my engine bay when it started to peel and flake off

, and if its been cleaned you cant see if there are any leaks..................which i suppose is the point.

Hard gained experience has shown these low mileage garage stored cars are a real ambush of
your wallet just waiting to happen and as you say Dean, higher miled ones have been no trouble
whatsoever!!
My 24v'er has over 200k miles on it and there's no sign of any significant issues because of the
mileage.
Unbelievably, there aren't any Xantiae in my local car dismantlers so I've had to resort to buying
another complete car which means the car count is still rising even when I need to significantly
reduce it!!

Everything genuine and the other stuff being stolen is being sucked into the black hole in the
far east - about the only decent export this rubbish country of ours is good at now.

Andrew.
I assume thats a Series 1 24v car with the Ceramic mod to the heads?? Thats a fantastic sign then that the factory/dealer mod worked and made the engine last.. why oh why didn't they do it from the start, there could be more about...
My 24v is, well now, ONLY on 123k and sounds VERY well...
Cannot wait to get her back on the road!

Did you ever hear anything or more importantly get anything back the thieving ba**ards took, i suppose the stuff was long gone and scrapped before plod had a chance to do anything?
Definitely agree about the millage when the car is as old as some of ours, lets face it, its not going to really affect the resale value so long as it drives well. And like you say 200k on the V6 and still going strong, when i got mine the gaiters where all perished so where the dust covers on the ball joints and the front wheel bearings where noisy as hell with 45k on the clock! by the time i got it home the two outer gaiters had litterally crumbled away.............cars dont like sitting around doing nothing.

Citroen wheel bearings in general are VERY durable...(My personal belief)
Ive not heard of an XM bearing needing dooing, nor a xantia one either!!
I remember early Vauxhalls needing changing at 80k a pop... Not sure what the newer ones are like now...

yes Citroenxm, and all vauxhall's seemed to have camshafts made out of cheese too, same as the old dohc ford engines, 70k and they sounded like a can of nails being rolled down the road, the top end wear rate was horrific.
