Full Version Stiff Spot On Steering

Club XM Forum > Hydraulics Issues
lez
steering has developed a tight spot at 11oclock and 5oclock positions

Guess steering rack is shot?

topped up the lhm, run rack end to end, even disconnected track rod
ends so its not even turning the wheels, still has still spot, oddly
worse with engine running.

when it gets to these tight spots, it needs a pull on the wheel to
turn it, you cant let the wheel slip through your hands coming out of
a corner etc, it gets to 11oclock and just sits their, stuck, you
would go round in circles for ever.....

needs at a guess about 6lbs of weight at the wheel to shift it with
engine running, about 2lbs engine off.

had 4 days off this its annoying now.....

Had this on a Xantia! It's not the rack but the universal joint at the base of the column through
the bulkhead that's dried out and is seizing up!! Try lubricating oil spray first but it'll likely need
renewal - not the easiest of jobs...

Thats interesting, had this on a Xantia too, an L plate with Later 6+2 pump, it too got VERY stiff after dooing a pump swap to cure a leak...

I prepared a Pinion valve, that looks ok to change, however, the client kept useing the car and then reported that its slowly freed itself up again... but I'll also try the lubrication on it and see what results I get...
