Because the factory sealent on the aerial base dries out and becomes ineffective, eventually letting water in, which ends up coming down through the light / climate control fan housing.
Not only that, the amount of water that showers you is totally disproportionate to the size of the hole / leak!!!!!

After a very heavy downpour yesterday there was about a pint of water absorbed by the towel that I put over the gearleaver area. Also, water was still dripping from the little o/head console. It's a wonder that any of the electrics still work in that area!

Still the car's going in in 10 days to have that all rectified and hopefully, roof back working.
