Hi what sort of mpg does everyone on here with the 2.1td get? I hear some claims of 50mpg+. Mine's an auto estate with air con, so i'd expect less, but i never better 37mpg on the motorway, and 30mpg around the back roads and traffic.

My 2.1td manual estate will do 48 - 52 ish at 70 ish on the motorway, that's with the aircon off though. Anywhere between 90 - 100 and it drops to low 40's. Around town it does about the same as your car on the motorway.

I must say I don't like the way autos drive around town, the ones I have driven seem to hold the revs high in 2nd and 3rd gears whereas I'd be pootling along practically on tickover in my car.

Is your car a S1.5 or a S2?

I guess it has BOSCH as you use veggie oil?

Early cars do tend to do more MPG then later cars.. Early as is up to about N reg or even P reg..

Lucas epics are useless on fuel, due to all the emission control stuff fitted.

Hatches will do more as theres less weight to carry about, and obviously manuals do more too, due to less revving constantly..

Estates being longer and a tad heavyer will do less MPG.. 30 around town in an auto to be honest sounds right.. But I would expect more on the motorway, with or without the air con on...

My manual estates average 40+ mpg and will quite easily exceed 50 mpg on a run. Its got a lot to do with your driving style and location, I live in a rural area and seldom venture into a large town, I also drive fairly gently and not very fast. An auto won't be as good partly because it wont let you drive economically and because of the friction losses in the system. I would have thought you ought to have got 40+ on the motorway driven at the legal limit.

Just done a trip from Home to Huddersfield West Yorkshire just me and the dog filled up the tank with 78.88 Litres at £93,
did 225 Miles at 60 miles per hour on the M25 & M1 and got 52.8 Mpg then 240 Miles driving locally went to see all the family and had a set of reconditioned spheres fitted at WestoRoen Spheres it took about 1and a half hours and what a difference it made,and got about 38 mpg. finally on the return journey did 224 miles at 60 miles an hour and only got 42.1 Mpg then filled up again at asda with another 78 Litres. Total 689 Miles i expexted about 800miles.
I did notice the temperature gauge only went up to 65-70 degrees on the motorway but locally up and down the hills it went up to 90 Degrees but no higher it makes me wonder if the thermostat is sticking open, and that was without the air con on, any ideas anyone?

First call has to be the main thermostat (underneath and behind the 'overflow tank')
If not available from Citroen try 'QH' make from local factor) but get a new gasket if you can, though blue gasket seal has been known to do the job.

If it's a 2.1 it only has one thermostat, located in a far from accessable place! At the right hand bottom corner of the back of the engine - just in front of the pedals. Its not to bad to change though because you can get your hands in and feel your way round. I have done a couple of them.

I dont think that will make a tremendous difference to your fuel consumption though - it is obviously working, if running a little cool. On the motorway you have a much greater airflow through the radiator than when driving more slowly in traffic, that will account for the difference in temperature.

Its very difficult to drive an auto economically as the losses inherent in the auto box/torque converter are fairly constant and so represent an even greater proportion of the fuel used when you are trying to drive economically. In addition you dont have the same control over the revs with the auto. The manual will quite happily pull down to almost tickover speed but the auto will not allow that.

At a steady 60 mph the manual will do well in excess of 50 mpg and while I would have thought the auto should have done a little better, that's probably about the ball park figure - especially if you are using the cruise control.

Your temp readings sound perfectly normal...

An engine is NOT working half as hard on a motorway, so natraully will cool slightly... around town, yes warmer, as its not moving as fast for the flow of air..

Your MPG sounds VERY good for a LATE 2.1 td with an auto box.. I'd be quite pleased with those figures...

All in all, pleasing figures for an IDI Turbo engine with an auto box, both mpg and temp readings!

Hi magic carpet, Normans figures are good. As dealt with previously on another thread both Peter N and myself achieve 800 to a tank.In my case- both auto's, one bosch one epic- this is during the journey between work in Toulouse and home in the highlands over the past 4 years. This is a 24 hour/1320mile trip ,sharing driving with my wife,changing over at 3 hour food/toilet breaks,so the engine never cools.In normal day to day use nothing like this is attainable and 550 to 650 is the norm before the low fuel warning light illuminates.Obviously many factors influence results.My old 92 Mk1 SED manual (Lucas) returned slightly better figures in day to day use, 600 to 700 miles to the tank but during that time from home to work in Geneva it only equalled the auto's figures.As you can see i don't use actual mpg figures, only range to warning light,whereby i fill up when convenient.

Hi all
Just got back from another trip.I got 50.5mpg all the way back from the Allier,France(490 miles).Mind you that was sticking at 65-70mph.Due to the weak £ Diesel was around £1.12 per litre at the current exchange rate but would have been £0.98 with a decent exchange rate.Have covered 61K in it in just 2 years now!

I don't use the aircon as it is not working(I did have it regassed and it seemed to be cold for a while).Then with the aux belt problems I stopped switching it on altogether as it seemed to make the wear on the belt worse.
The thermostat is still stuck open but was running at 70-85ish anyway due to load,hills on the autoroutes and the higher 25 degree+ air temps over there.
It wasn't the perfect run either as I did get stuck in traffic and it included a 100 mile section with dual carriageways and numerous roundabouts.
I don't drive or accelerate quickly and use the computer to see the effect on my driving-the economy has improved dramatically as a result.
The trip down always uses more fuel and I had a roof rack on with 5 internal doors on it.I reckon I lost about 10% of the fuel efficiency and only got around 42mpg on the outward journey.
My record is around 870 actual miles on a tankfull and I really think with a long run similar to yesterdays journey I could achieve 950-1000 miles.(I never fill it to the gunnels like I used to with the 2.1,but I am sure you can just about get 90 litres(20 galls)in them.
The longest continuous trip I ever did in a day was 850 miles,normally it is 600 when you then go onto pottering around and non autoroute driving at your destination.
It still drives as well as when I 1st got it and is coming up to 174K now including the 61K I have put on it in just 2 years now...it has been excellent.
My Goodyear NCT 5's have over 45K on them now and are still good for 5K+,but this is mainly due to the high autoroute miles.They have all worn down fairly evenly as well due to rotating them from front to back.I am sure a budget tyre wouldn't last that long on an XM and they were only £211 for the 4!

I just checked the 2.1TD here... Around town, all cold starts, short trips.... 28mpg ....10L/100kms ... Runs perfectly, and no sign of unburnt fuel out the back. I guess that's all they'll do in town. The V6 version would probably only get 15mpg doing the same work
