There is a very real possibility (but not yet an absolute cert.) that my XM will need a new cat.

I need to do some sums. What do these things cost now? Any preferred suppliers?

P S I'm out now for the rest of the day so won't be able to answer any questions until this evening

You could just bridge the offending item with a straighthrough pipe if the car is pre 93 model;
after this date you have to have one as it's the law. The hot hatch boys all have an MOT
pipe and a post MOT pipe for the other 364 days of the year as this will give better breathing
to the engine with improved performance and mpg albeit with a slightly rortier exhaust note.

I'd imagine it'd be like trying to breathe under water with a big straw and then through a
slightly blocked one. Good old legislation dogooders...

The bottom line is I believe the lambda sensor still needs to be there still but this is upwind of
the cat.

I do have 2 or 3 spare in my shead, 2 I think...

But I guess you'll want to put a known new one on..

I beleve the 2 are in good order, I certainly dont recall smelling "Rotton Eggs" before they were removed from the cars they were on..

There's a ceramic one (whatever that means!) for £117.54 + vat
There's a steel one for an additional £50!
The first price isn't cheap but it's not hideous either.

If you do it your self I would be VERY VERY interested to know how the hell you'll get (Looking up at the exhaust manifold from UNDER the car) the manifold to pipe bolt out of the DRIVERS side of the pipe!!

I agree. For once it's a damnsight easier on the 24v'er!
It's not made any better if the AC compressor is there on the top jammed up against the bulkhead...

Still not sure that it is the cat. It's failing the MOT on excessive emissions on tick-over. Duff information from some control sensor, if I'm lucky; cat if I'm not!

Could be the dreaded lambda sensor. After the fuel scare last year we'll all know
what they're all about...

At my Indy's suggestion a bottle of "Cataclean" (http://www.systemproducts.com ) was put in the tank. It has now passed the emissions test. It's OK now for another year.

Bit of an anti-climax really but thank you again, Andrew and Cit. Let's hope that I don't need to revisit this in a year's time!!
