Hi Charlie,
My last pair came from a french scrapyard when I was over there for my summer holidays. Looking around the scapyard there were about 10 XM's but only two had the larger diameter struts suitable for the 2.5TD. There were plenty others with the smaller diameter struts. The french weather and possibly the lack of road salt means that even second hand ones look like new.
I appreciate that unless you've got a trip planned then this advice may not be any use to you. However, the chances of getting a good pair in the UK because of the stated problems is very low. Thats not to say impossible, but remember, there are many XM owners in the same boat llooking for the same pair of strut tops. Its a common quest.
The scrapyard I used was in Mayenne and they actually remove the part for you. Therefore I suggest they may post them to you if you call them. A word of warning though. French scrapyard owners come out of the same mould as UK ones. They are extremely surly and have awful customer service. I found that as long as I gave as good as I got in my pidgin french I got enough respect to be able to complete the transaction. When they discovered I was english to start with they just ignored me. I had to make a nuisance of myself to get their attention. After that it was OK.
cheers
