I'm with you all here. It's a complete pain in the arse. I'm running it on my new company laptop 2Gb RAM and no improvement over my old laptop. Progress! It's a pain since sometimes even simple drivers won't load and you end up trying to bodge XP drives or something.

All for it to look more like a Mac!

As a software company it was an amazing time when MS first released Vista. They catagorically told us that our software wouldn't run on it and wanted to charge a huige amount for support. The software worked fine!

Its great to read how to do it properly, I have always drilled out the central rivet in the spool cover, tied a knot in the end of some hopefully stainless bike brake or gear cable, then wrapped it round the spool, applied lots of grease and assembled everything roughly. Then pulled the wires round the pulleys and tied more knots at the nylon block that goes into the window. It may take a couple of tries to get the length right, but the springs alow for a fair bit of leeway, then a large jubilee clip or couple of big cable ties to hold the cover back on the spool and the jobs done.
The six inch nail is a great advance but it is dead easy to work when the casing is in bits and I have never had any trouble with the jubilee clip method.

I can't read the .doc extentions so don't know what's written but I have used mackay1's kits three times now and his fixing instructions , cable and ferrules are brilliant. Stainless too!

I secured the cover back on the spool by drilling the spindle, 2.5mm drill, and threaded with M3 tap, spot of threadlock on the setscrew and suitable washer to finish.
