I currently run a mixed ide/sata setup. Ide is primary "c".

I want to remove the ide drive and run sata as primary.

How can I transfer everything from the ide drive to the sata drive in a nice simple way?

Anyone?

Hi Derek,

Copying files from one drive to another is very simple, however if you want to be able to boot from the new drive, without reinstalling the OS etc, then a straight file copy isn't going to do it because the boot sector won't be intact.

There's an excellent program called Norton Ghost, which can make an exact image of the entire drive and write it to another drive or partition, preserving everything.

If you need a copy of such, or any info on doing it, just drop me a message and I'll help you sort it out.

Alternatively, if you're in a hurry, just install a new OS on the SATA drive and copy all your data across, before ditching the IDE drive. Obviously that might not be diserable if you have a lot of custom settings and a nice stable installation though.

There is also an open source disk imaging utility out there - SelfImage I think it is called. Not used it though, so I can't vouch for it. I imagine it is not as featured as Ghost, but probably does the basics OK.

There are also 2 good ones by Paragon and Acronis. You often find old versions of them going free in magazines or if you are lucky on the web.
