Hi all
Having just gone through the trauma of losing my one and only key I thought I'd ask how I can get a spare....actually I have found the key as my elderly father put it in the light bulb cupboard(reason unknown!!!).
So I have my original plipper key....can I get a spare?
A few years back a mate lost the keys to his Range Rover whilst out on his quadbike.I was enlisted to wander around the fields with my metal detector trying to find it as he had been quoted well into 3 figs to replace it.After a few hours of searching he found it in the turn-ups on his trousers...how we(no actually he) laughed ph34r.gif

Hi Rob

I think Citroen is your only guaranteed choice, but you will need the number, althought the other key will do now you've found it! I paid about £60-70 for a plip several years ago, that was without the key. Your original plip will have a number printed on a label stuck to the printed circuit board. I did get a key cut by an ordinary key maker but it was not very succesful, opened the door but wouldn't work the ignition switch, he said they were particularly difficult keys to cut. He did offer me my money back but I decided to buy it for half price as at least it ment my wife could get into the car if we were both out together.

I expect someone will tell you where you can get one cut properly. I only have one key for mine (plus the ill fitting one) so could do with another myself.

The above is on a Mk2 car, dont know if the Mk1 is the same.

I have gone down exactly the same route as you Peter. One key/plip supplied with the car (which didn't work) so I had one cut which just about opened the door but wouldn't fit the ignition. Amazing.

My mk 1.5 will only work with 1 plip (all the infra red ones are the same). I had a spare key made by a local locksmith with 100% success although this is only a dumb key with no plip it works all the locks and the ignition no problem, all for £15.

Hi John

Was this a private locksmith or a national company?

Just a local shop, no franchise or national chain that I could make out.

He isn't one of those shoe repair/ key cutting places but a dedicated seller of locks etc.

Thanks - you will have to start a mail order service. biggrin.gif

The Series one plip is easy enough to copy. Take the pcb out and look on the underside, you will see some trackcs that have been drilled though, all you have to do is to make or break the same tracks on a second S1 key fob PCB and you have copied it. Thats how I copied mine so I had 2 proper spare plips.

I should add, it does take some very carefull soldering!

Hi All

The odd Citroen dealers cut keys for XM's. Most other dealers will only order against code number. Ignition lock has the most tumblers so pattern and blank key to be cut need to be very carefully mounted in the machine for copying. The dealer I go to for keys (Solent Citroen, Portsmouth) will supply both ordinary and plip key blades cut while you wait. If the pattern key or ignition switch are well worn there is a particular problem with cutting new keys. Ignition lock failure happens every now and again but I just make them cut another key for free until we get a working one and I keep the failures if they work the other locks.
Might be able to find the odd spare keys and lock sets if anyone is really stuck and I can also make up retumblered lock barrels to suit any XM key. You can buy a new set from Citroen for about £70.

Is it possible to reprogram the key?
I've a seat ibiza that is possible to reprogram the key, with the car.
You just have to press a certain number of times a boton then put the key on the drivers loker, turn and keep it turn during 10 seconds, after this the receptor makes the emission of the sinal, reprograming the key.

The led on my key blinks, but the doors don't actuate.
Is it a wrong code key, or a receptor malfunction?

Any ideias?

Hi Miguel

If the Plip seems to work then it is most likely the receiver that has failed. I cannot be sure that yours is the same as the UK ones. There were differences in the type of plips/receiver fitted to Mk2 XM's to suit various countries requirements. No one has posted details of how to reprogramme the UK ones. In the UK Citroen replacements cost a lot. Some people have fitted cheaper universal kits that are sold on ebay.
