Please pardon my ignorance, but how does a mere mortal like me get into an auction and bid on/ buy the car of my dreams.

I have become addicted to old cars as they just seem to get cheaper and cheaper.

Can most of the vehicles be driven away, do they let you leave the car until you have arranged insurance etc?

Most auction house will allow you to leave the car for 24 hours, after that they usually charge for storage.

Again most auctions are open to everyone, few are trade only, but they do exist. Go along a few times and get the feel of it before bidding on anything.

Remember most cars are in the auction for one reason or another. Try to get one that's come from the main dealers, that way it will have part-ex for something newer and may be there just because it's old.

Beware, some auctions are simply a dumping ground for scrap cars. I've has some good cars from the auctions, and one bad one.

Pretty much all the BCA sales are open to everyone and it's dead simple. If you're not on account with them, then you must have a cash deposit of £500 or 10% of the purchase price, whichever is the greater. You must then settle up in full within 24 hours. I'm not sure if there's any provision to leave the car for longer; I always think it's a good idea to get it away asap, since I suspect there's not overmuch care taken of older motors. They also offer a quite reasonable delivery service, which would let you get it home without fussing with the insurance,
Obviously with something like this XM, it's not going to make much, if anything over the £500 anyway. The only sting in the tail is the auction house 'indemnity' charge, which is a ccomplete rip off.
A late one like this has to at least be worth a look, if it's what you're after. Good luck.

Hi all.

Quick update to Measham motor. Seen photo --- looks nice. More important though, there is no log book with it, which always depresses the price.

Also listed ---- BCA Blackbushe, 2nd July, 2.0 Manual Estate, Red. This one is either an import or a complete cock up, as it's down as first reg. 2004. It's on a 'K' plate.
