Full Version Cruise Control On A Vsx?

I'm not sure as to whether this should be in electrical or mechanical or both so I've put it here. Please move if incorrect.

Could anyone tell me if cruise control was fitted to XMs with Lucas Epic pumps? If so how was it done - electrical or mechanical? If it was could it be retro fitted? Is it practical?

Steve.

Hi Steelcity

As far as I am aware on UK XM's only the 2.5's were fitted with electronic cruise. All others got the Vacuum cruise system. The only doubts I have are that some late 2.1's may have been supplied with fly-by-wire to suit electronic cruise.
Retro fitting depends on the car model.
Vac cruise could be retro fitted to any XM as it is a seperate system with its own discrete ECU. According to car model some of the components/wiring might be installed as part of the standard production fitting. To me from scratch it seems a pretty horrendous operation fraught with some real system commissioning problems. If part of the system is already insitu then it may be a lot easier.
Electronic cruise uses a section of the programming code in the main ECU for its control system. The ECU either has it present or it does not. Swapping ECU's between engine types will not work unless you can reprogramme the software in ECU's. For 2.5's I suspect the cruise routines are present in all ECU's (ORG6591 is the earliest 2.5 that I have retro fitted with cruise). You just plug the bits in and on next start up they are recognised as present.

It sounds as if it's not worth the hassle. If it was a straight forward connecting up job then I might have considered it.

Did any 2.1s have cruise control?

Thanks.

This is interesting, my 2.1TD (previously 2.0TCT) originally had cruise, so I believe the wiring is all present, might have to have a go at lashing up a vac cruise ECU at some point....

Hi Steve.

Certainly my 2.1 has it, factory fit, although not working. Keep meaning to find the time to have a dabble at it ! Can't say I'd fancy retro fitting it unless I had a complete donor car to hand.

Hi On-the-cut

Which type Vac or Electronic was factory fitted to your 2.1?

Hi all,
As xmexclusive correctly reports, 2.1 td's with or without lucas EPIC only had the stand alone vacuum sytem fitted for cruise contol ,the EPIC was incapable of supporting the programming, being a fairly simple device for pump management and not a full ECU. However in my experience all MK 2's have the wiring harnesses installed and therefore should be readily retrofitted with original factory components. Good luck should you wish to try it, and i would be keen to know how you got on.

I need to come up with a list of parts. Maybe PR NET has the right details.

Any pointers would be great.

Thanks.
