Since there is a rash of intros about, here goes:
On my fourth XM.
First was an 1990 SEi 2l bought in 1992 for £6000! Sounds a lot now but that was £20000 pounds depreciation in 2 years. Eventually started refusing to start at around 180000 miles and 10 years later - with an auto box no less! It was beginning to fall apart (especially after I reversed into a bollard).

Second was an L reg Si turbo 2l which already had £190k on the clock! You'd never ordinarily buy a car with that much on the clock but it lasted a further 60k and 5 years. Eventually the turbo broke in a non-repairable way, not a fatal problem of course and driving it without the turbo certainly improved the petrol consumption. The manual turbo car is a total speed demon, totally different in character to the non-turbo auto which was very sedate (in a good way) in comparison!

Third was my only mistake, an SX estate with one of those 16v hairdryer engines complete with tappet noise! Something really strange went wrong with the parking brake and the pedal travel became so long it failed its MOT. Even my pet mechanic gave up with trying to mend that one, so sold to another braver than me.

Finally the latest is a 1996 xm exclusive with all the pretty stuff still working. The usual green colour. Except the back suspension is in hard. I'll tell you the results of my soldering mods to the ECU soon. Still prefer the Series 1 interior though!
Cheers

Hi Steve nice to see you on the forum.

I'll be interested to see how your soldering goes as I think I have the same problem. Maybe a few piccies?

Cheers,

Hi Steve

Welcome to the club, unless I've done that before, you will have to excuse me the memorys not so good!

I paid about £6,000 for my first XM, a Mk1 '93 2.1 td estate and had loads of problems with it. My first Mk2 I bought for around £1,200 with 240k miles and sold it at 292k! had less trouble than with the 3 year old one!

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Hi Steve,

Interested to see you got 180k on an autobox. Considering the number of doom and gloom merchants banging on about them not lasting more than 120k; I would like to hear from people like yourself on the circumstances leading to longevity. eg. was yours diesel or petrol? What proportion of mileage free flow as opposed to stop start in heavy traffic. ATF used and service interval. Any other factors which occur to you?
R. (must intro myself sometime).

Hi Bukko.

My auto is on 137k and faultless so far. It's the dumb diesel box, not the auto adaptive version. On these simple auto boxes, in my opinion, the biggest single factor to long life is regular fluid changes -- certainly more often than they suggest. If you trawl the net, there's mountains of stuff on the later ZF boxes, fitted to differing makes, most of which makes me suspect they've been built down to a price.

Mike.
