Hi everyone,

Pardon my ignorance but I am currently looking at buying an XM in the coming months. I can see from general data and the Haynes manual that the estate has a longer wheelbase than the saloon, does this mean that there is more rear legroom in the estate as my excuse for changing my car is based on the fact hat my eldest daughter is getting tall and has nothing to do with me being an automotive masochist. (no really)

There is no difference in the leg room between the seats. Cars and estates have the same chassis except in the boot area. Even the 4 side doors are the same except for an extra bit of plastic trim at the top of the door.

Have just had a look in an XM owners manual and found an entry of 2850mm for the wheelbase of both a saloon and an estate. I measured my car that was on the drive for good measure and this agreed. I then had a look at Haynes and realised where you were comming from. Haynes must have had one of his better days, found his tape measure, also an XM Saloon and an Estate, so set to work.
Without anyone to hold the end of the tape or pen and pad to write down the results he arrived at: Hatchback - 2446 mm, Estate 2700 mm.

You have found the first rule of XM ownership, get yourself a copy of Haynes because if you do buy an XM you are going to need something to laugh about.

My previous answer stands, no difference in leg room, Haynes is wrong again.

I'm 6'4" tall and I fit in the back great lots of leg room, I own a saloon but go have a look and think over what best suits your needs
