Hi all,
I note from the various postings that there are a number of different petrol and diesel engines fitted to XMs. Can someone please give me a quick summary of the variants and if possible the respective intro points (ORGA Nos).
The diesels seem obvious but I'm confused about the petrol ones - especially V6s. I also saw a post recently that indicated the 2.0 Turbo engines can't be rebuilt. Is that something to do with the liners?

Hi Kiwi
1989 - Base 2.0i Multipoint 8 v
3.0 v6 12 valve Si trim and SEi trim. 1989 to 1996 (I think)
1991 2.0 V6 24valve 90deg VERY Rare
1994 2.0i 8v Turbo engine available on all models
1995 2.0i engine gets 16 valves, (8 valve dropped??)
1997 3.0 V6 replaced with 60 deg 3.0 V6 24valve and gets new auto adaptive gearbox
Diesels.
2.1td From 1989 to 1998. Either Bosch or Lucas fuel systems. (Early Bosch better and more economical) Change to Lucas at around n/p reg
2.5td From possibly 1995 M reg. Not too sure. The one to have however not the one to work on!!
A very BRIEF engine option. Anyone better or correct this, its 8am, and completely off the top of my head!

Hi kiwi,
citroenxm is right (except "1991", he probably meant to write: "3lt 24v"). Briefly, I would add that there are 2 versions of the 2lt turbo engine, I think one is RGY and the other RGE or RGX or something , with slight performance differences (like, 5hp nominal). That's more important as it sounds because there have been endless discussion threads in various forums about the max hp of one of those in overboost being 190hp!
Also, in France and other countries there have been XMs with a simple 2lt carburator, 2.1d non-turbo with 80hp, non-hydractive XMs (on the previous two engines), XMs equipped with DIRAVI steering like the SM and CX (some 3lt versions (incl. mine!) but only left-hand drive countries), but I guess you are only interested in right-hand driven XMs.
I have the original Citroen parts catalogue for all the XM range, if u want no problem I'll print the relevant pages off, or record all on a CD, and post it to you, cost should be negligible, just write me your address (I can't email it to you as it's 53mb each and the system won't allow it to go out -I had downloaded this from a website but can't remember which). I guess it'll make your life easier overthere!
let me know.
cheers

....also: the V6s is a rather sad story in the XMs. They first used (1989 up to almost the end of its career) a version of the old PRV engine. This had been developed by a joint venture of Renauilt-Peugeot and Volvo in the early 70s as to make a V8 unit, that's why it's 90 degrees. However, mainly because of the petrol crisis that struck then they decided to make it a V6, but it has the wrong degress for a V6 (60 is the ideal). Anyway, the XM's version has a corrected crancshaft so it overcomes this fundamental mistake. From this simple 2v/cylider PRV they made a 4v/cylinder that went into sale in 1991, and equiped also the Peugeot 605 SV. Those first engines were all self-destructed very quickly (within the 60,000 miles) as they had a lubrication problem at the top of the engine. Then PSA treated this engine to graphite valves etc in June 1992 I think, and those of that batch were OK, with a normal engine life. This 24v PRV was sold till 1995 (in mainland Europe at least). Then PSA and renault designed a whole new 2946c cengine V6 at 60 degrees which they put in the XM from 1997 I think. This came only in auto version with the completely new, very good "clever" gearbox, as citroenxm mentions. While the 24v PRV came only as manual, and the 12v PRV manual and auto (this auto gearbox had a limited life, usually around the 100,000 miles mark). Note that the 12v PRV has been used in various other cars, incuding a 250hp turbo version in the Renault Alpine. Also the late Renault Safrane Quadra (4x4) had the 12v PRV in a bi-turbo version with 250hp again, if I remember well. In the LeMans champioship, it was the base engine for the Peugeot 905s and -I think!- still holds the title for the strongest Lemans engine ever (900hp).

Jorgy,
you mention the new clever box, known as auto adaptive,
I rode in an XM TD 2.1, with wait for it 330,544 MILES!!! On original BOX and engine
It was a 1999 W reg XM. Box was ok but wouldn't start from 1st in D..
The old box IE: as in mine and yours was a disaster, old again.
Shame - similar story like the DS, advanced looks and technology but CRAP mechanics untill its too late!
We love em anyway.

Hi All
Just to add that the 2.5TD engine was first introduced with the Mk2 cars for the 1995 model year. I think that the Citroen Model year ran from the May or June of the previous year. So Mk2's and 2.5TD engines first appeared in late spring 1994.

Hi,
Thanks all for the info - it makes more sense now. I assume that the first 24v V6 was offered as a performance option? I had assumed (from some of the posts) that the first V6s were all 24v.
Some of the posts I have seen indicated that the 2.0 petrol turbo engines can't be rebuilt. Is that the case? That model appeals to me but they are rare here. I'd like one but not if the engine can't be rebuilt.
George, thanks for the offer of the parts manual. I found a site and dowloaded a microfiche version but the quality seems generally okay. Thanks again for the info.

Hi Jorgy
re-autoadaptive gearbox
"It was a 1999 W reg XM. Box was ok but wouldn't start from 1st in D"
Sounds like it was in, or stuck in snow mode which skips first and starts in second.
Cheers
Tony
