at last i have my engine going,i sent the fuel pump to be overhauled. it starts first time every time,engine seems to be more rattlely than before suspect its one of two things,my hydrolic tappets havent reached there settings,[I was told when i had them off to squeeze them down. Or the pump might need advancing or retarding. any body got any thoughts on this regard johnny

Glad to hear the old bus is back on the road again, congratulations.

As for your tapping noise you need to establish with more accuracy the likely culprit.

Make up a stethescope by whatever means you can. Even a piece of 10mm wooden dowling will do. Put one end of the dowling against the flap of skin at the entrance to your ear and bend over the opening to the ear canal. This acts as a drum amplifying any sound produced at the end of the dowling rod. Place the other end of the rod on various (stationary! ) parts of the engine whilst it's running and try to establish the loudest source of the sound. Put it on the body of the pump and the rocker cover.

This should help establish the source of the noise.

We'll take it from there one we understand a bit more about the problem.

cheer Noz havent had time yet to try your advice yet the weather is bad a the moment i realey think it,s the tappets the car is running great the fuel consumption is amazing i have done 120 miles and the fuel gauge has only just started to move once again thank you for knowledge and help regards johhny

I have three tappets which I bought when I thought my melted piston was faulty tappets. I fitted the new ones and of course it made no difference. I've still got the old ones. You'd be welcome to them for a small donation if you discover thats what your problem is.
