Abs Sensors, Recovery from scrap cars

Hi All

In the last few days I have tried a new way of recovering ABS sensors with some success (100% so far).
After loosening the two bolts that hold the sensor in place I slid the blade of a wallpaper scraper between the sensor end and the toothed wheel. I then used a chisel point between the scraper blade and the toothed wheel. I found that I could tap the chisel gently with a hammer and the ABS sensor comes free without being damaged. Previously I was lucky to get 1 in 5 out good.

Take a gold star and go to the top of the class. A superb tip. If you think how many abs sensors must get crushed when cars are scrapped which still have plenty life left in them. It just doesn't bear thinking about.

When you have got the sensors out at the scrap yard and go to pay up they will be very cheap because everyone knows you cannot get them out without damaging them. I usually say that I am hoping to get one good one out of the four and they usually say two quid and you cannot bring them back if they do not work.
Now are the ABS sensors fitted to XANTIAS and PUG406's compatible?
Add that to Citroenxm's finding that if you modify the leads you can fit front wheel sensors to the back and v/v.
We could have a solution when everyone has sold off their old stock of XM sensors.
I see there is a Teves new sensor on ebay at the moment. Its mine for now but for how long.

Hi All

The tip about using a thin blade and chisel to push the ABS sensor out to recover it is easy to do on the front wheel sensors. Have not yet worked out if it will work on rear wheel sensors as those on the donor car had been put in with a good amount of petroleum jelly so they came out easily just a little twist and gentle pull with the fingers. I shall coat any I put in with PJ in future as it seems to prevent corrosion. I cannot be sure how long these had been installed but they must have been replaced to get treated like this.
