Can anyone give me simple, clear instructions on how to chang the LHM fluid or should I go to a garage.

I live in Perthshire and wondered if anyone knows of someone who can repair/service XMs in this area

Its not to difficult but you do have to remove the LHM reservoir. Set the suspension to it lowest level, that will ensure that as much fluid as possible is returned to the reservoir. Remove the wire clip that holds the return pipe cluster in place, pulling one end outwards should do it. Remove the 10mm bolt on the RH front corner of the container, pull out the clip on the LH corner and then pull the container forward out of the locating hole ( the above is on a Mk2, the Mk1 may be a little different) Remove the return pipe cluster from the reservoir, this will probably require some effort as the pipes are a bit short, and then lift out the reservoir.

Empty the contents into a suitable container and thoroughly clean the interior of the reservoir. You will notice two filters on the underside of the cluster assy, one is held in by a small wire clip and the other can be removed by twisting anti clockwise, clean both of these filters with petrol or detergent and refit, reassemble and refit reservoir.

Initially fill it with about three litres of fluid. You will now need to disconnect the thick rubber input hose to the pump at the reservoir end, this is to bleed any air from the pipe. Cut off the original clamp and use a suitable Jubilee type clip as a replacement. Fill the pipe with fluid and quickly refit so as to lose as little fluid as possible. Put the height lever back to normal and start the engine, if the pressure light doesn't go out within a minute or so, repeat the process as often as necessary.

This may all sound complicated but it isn't really and shouldn't take more than an hour.

GFS is the cheapest place for fluid, if you have one locally.

Hi Jackyboy,

I'm near Falkirk so if you want to chat about XM's and their woes just drop me a line and we can meet up. Whereabouts in Perthshire?

Hi Noz
I live in a place called Amulree, lies between Crieff and Dunkeld. I would love to find a mechanic or garage who knows XMs to do some bits and pieces on my XM.

If I had half a brain I,d get rid of the car but I just love the thing. It's the second one I've had, first one was the old Mk1 which was only 3 years old at the time but I had none stop problems and after 5 months I returned it to the dealer. Changed it for an XJ6 and I actually liked the XM more. Anyway I have been smitten ever since, always looking at Xms. After several years I found the one I have now. It was a one owner with 36k on the clock. Couldn't resist it and here I am still with it after nearly 3 years (still only done 56k now).

I am unable to carry out much stuff myself and the only Citroen Dealer around here is Arnold Clarks, absolute robbers. I put the car in because it was sucking air into the diesel, they quoted me £180 and when I got the car back it was nearly £800, plus the ABS sensor light was on which had never happened before.

Could go on and on, speak soon

Jim (Jackyboy)
