Hi
I don't thik the jpeg has worked. All I got was a load of gobbledygook!
I'll try again.
Just another thought, on my reply from NOZ earlier on with this saga, you mentioned the thyristor pack on the fans, could that be related to the relay.
Is there any way of testing the relay that has a burnt out terminal (perhaps it is still working).

Hi there "XM_on_ a_ shoestring",

I attach a word doc below with a foto of the little black relay box in front of the air filter box -is this where you found the relay u refer to?- and their use. I peaked this from the "Planete Citroen" forum as was reading a related thread.

As u will see:

-relay labelled "4" is for cutting the cooling (climate) compressor

-relay "7" is the climatisation (air conditioning) system's relay

The other relays there are not related to the aircon. I have no idea of aircons or electrics but, having read your investigation thread, it seems you are getting near the culprit. Sorry I can't help more.

regards
George

Hi George
Thanks for the reply.
I seem to be unable to open attachments at the moment (I use Firefox. I also tried Internet Explorer and that came out the same).
There are three relays together and it is the one closest to the nearside which has the burnt out connection and it is the bottom most connector on the relay.
Regards
shoestring.

xm-on-a-shoestring, do you want me to email it to you? Pm me your email if so.

George

If you read my story on my trip to France, then let this be a warning to anyone with the same aircon symtoms I've had.
We were dut to go to France in my 2.5td estate. We got to Dover, no problems no noises coming from under the bonnet ... then it would justnot sart again. What was it? The air con compressor pulley seized and would not go again.

From this I have deduced the following:

1. Strange burning smell from dashboard - this is one of the large resistors on back of heater controlboard getting hot. My local sparky said this component was still working (see jpeg in earlier reply), but for it to do that, something was putting it under alot of strain.
2. The strain now has shown to be the pulley bearing on the air con giving up.
3. No warnings came from the air con pulleybearings ie noisey bearings etc...
4. If you have had a burning smell from the heater control panel area, it could be your air con bearing on the way out. Get it stripped and overhauled before it lets you down.

So the only clue you had was that it smelled only with aircon on?

Hi Guest
Yes the slight burning smell(Like a scalextric control handle when it burns out!) was the only indication ... but that began last year about 12 months ago this weekend just gone.
I would therefore say the bearing was on the blink last year although there were no symptoms like noisey bearings ... I'm not familiar with the air con compressor, but I would of thought some kind of noise would have at least gave a clue to any problem.
As I mentioned the electrician said there was some heavy load causing the melting on the heater control circuit board.
