My 93 XM has always started first time, even if left for a couple of weeks. It still starts up first time, but just recently I have found that if I stop and then try and restart no joy(engine spins but does not fire or even cough) - until it has cooled down then away we go again first pull. Any suggestions?

A deafening silence is not the response I expected! Are you all diesel powered?

Mostly, The last petrol engine I worked on had a carburetter! The only thing I can suggest is that you follow the old route of fault finding, by determining whether the problem is due to ignition or fuel failure. If you take a plug lead off and stick a screwdriver into it and hold the blade near enough to a metal part of the engine to see if there is a spark when you turn it over, if not the problem is with the electrics (formerly ignition coil, contact breaker points or distributer) If electrics OK can you pull a fuel feed pipe off somwhere to establish if its reaching the injection system.

Surley, there must be someone out there that knows about petrol engines??

Alan - you say that the car runs OK at first start-up? does it conk out when you slow down? or stop completely? after a run of how many miles? then you let it cool down and it starts again first time?
Anyway it sounds heat related: that implies something expanding and breaking contact, does it not? Try checking all the electric side, starting with the easy bits (plugs, plug leads, coil leads, coil) then we can take it from there.
Slainte!

Another thought has just struck me! I suppose that the vent in your fuel filler cap hasn't got blocked? Next time it wont start, try removing the cap and see if it makes a hissing sound.
