Hi Guys,

the 2.1TD here is back on the road after putting a strut through the bonnet .... and now the heap of shit has decided to idle really roughly... it's not a distinct miss, but shakes through the car .... It runs perfectly once you move off.

I've unplugged the EGR pump in the past, and just blanked off the EGR pipe into the inlet manifold with a circle of alluminium. Any ideas what else could make it idle poorly ??

seeya,
Shane L.

Hi Shane

Does yours have a mechanical or EPIC pump? I suspect in either case you have a dodgy injector. There may just be some foriegn matter in it and a good blast my blow it out, otherwise its just a case of substituting the injectors one at a time. Is it smoking at all while ticking over?

It's a bosch pump ... strangely it runs really well at everything but idle.... I'll take a look tomorrow in the daylight and see if there is obvious smoke at idle.

It's *not* a distinct miss like a cylinder not firing though .... hmmmm.....

Oh good, they are the best sort. Its not missing just probably down on fuel a bit on one injector, as soon as you start putting more fuel in the difference is so small as to not be noticable. Could be that the pressure has dropped and the injector is opening early, so it would actually be putting to much fuel in. I have had a couple like that but not serious enough to worry about, just made the car rock a bit at low speed.

The old Perkins engines I used to run had a screw and nut under the cover like tappet adjusters and you could adjust the pressures while it was running - brilliant, I don't think you can do that with modern injectors though.

bleed the injector pipes, an airbubble in the pipe can have a squishing effect at low pressures etc and cause an injector to not open properly, but at higher pressures/speeds not have the effect.

I found it .... No 4 injector is leaking in the middle ohmy.gif ohmy.gif I can't unscrew it in the middle to see why it's leaking, and I can't get it out as I don't have a 27mm tube socket. The pump restricts access so much you'll strip the flats off completely before you'll get the injector apart.

Does anyone know where i can get an injector for a 2.1TD with bosch pump... If so I'll buy a 27mm long tube socket and try and get the injector out (note: I couldn't get them out when the head was removed either .... damn there tight!) ?? I also found the hose from the head to the cold start enrichment device is heavily perished and will fail stranding the car very soon. The hydraulic pump "idler pulley" is also buggered given the slop in it.

Where can I buy these parts for this car these days?

I need:
--an injector
--that badly coolant perished hose to the cold start device
--hydraulic pump idler pulley.

seeya,
Shane L.

That B*stard hose.. if Its the one I think it is. (under the pipe to the inlet manifold, which drips oil on it and then kills it) Is a sod to get, Citroen dealer only as its a diffrent diameter each end for no good engineering reason I can see other than to force you into a citroen dealer. Changing it is not hard at all.

Ballarat? Is that the place stuck in the 1800s? I am sure I visited a palce of that name that was a sort of 'living history' place in 1977 when I was in sydney (My dad was on a posting for BA)

Hi Shane,

Apologies for the likely stupid questions, I'm not that familiar with the 2.1TD. So these questions are based on my knowledge of the 2.5TD injectors. When you say the injector is leaking from the middle do you mean the split half way down where the two halves of the injector screw together? If so then there's a conical seal between the two halves of the injector which must be leaking. There's no gasket or anything. It just relies on a metal to metal seal albeit a conical one. In my experience the torque used to tighten the two halves of the injector together is such that the likelihood of a leak at that point is extremely low. What I have seen before is a dribbling leak-off pipe allowing fuel to trickle down the side of the injector and then spread around the injector where the top joins the bottom making it look like thats where the leak is coming from.

Could you have a look at the leak-off pipes first before spending a lot of time and expense chasing a leaking injector when it just might be somethign much simpler and cheaper?

Idler pulleys are made by aftermarket manufacturers which makes them a bit easier to get compared to the 'unique' hose that Zaphod is talking about. I'm sure I have a link or a catalogue for a company that does idler pulleys and bearings etc. I don't know how hard spares are to get in your neck of the woods but if they are available here then I'm sure someone would be more than willing to post them to you. I for one would be only too hapy to do that if you wish.

Cheers
