I do have a spare but I also still have an XM on the road, I changed it over with the one in the car because it didn't work and then found that the fuseholder in the under bonnet fusebox had failed, is your motor dead?

Peter

Shaun,

Whats the actual problem with your existing blower? Can we help you to test/diagnose it and maybe repair it?

Cheers

Hi shaun

Intermittant fan is usually caused by worn brushes on the fan or power problems.
The power is supplied by fuse F2 in the engine bay fuse box.
The fuse carries very heavy power for its physical size.
It is usually the poor quality contacts in the fuse box that burn out.
So the fuse remains and tests good.
On many Mk2 XM's this fuse gets bypassed often using thin wiring and the same size small fuse.
That fix usually melts out after a few years.
To bypass use heavy duty wires and weather proofed large fuse.

I can find and test a spare fan to send you if you are certain yours is faulty.

John

Shaun,

The other favourite is that the heater matrix springs a leak and fills the base of the heater box with water. When you go around a right hand bend the water sloshes out of the heater box and into the fan section. This covers the electronics pcb which is mounted on the fan itself for speed control purposes. The presence of the water sends the electronics mad and causes the fan to do strange things, sometimes ramping up and down whilst driving, other times it just goes dead. If none of the components are damaged in that process then the speed control pcb can be recovered by drying it out and cleaning up all the contacts including the spade connectors on the end of the cables.

It is not usual for the motor itself (i.e. the actual windings) to fail. It's more likely to be the brushes or Fuse F2 as John has stated above or the water issue. It's worth taking it out for a look. You never know it might be something really simple.
