This UK company sells the bonded repair strips for repairing C5 LCD displays and others eg BMW and Mercedes (but not the XM, unfortunately). They also sell the T-bar soldering iron bit which is required for bonding the repair strip to the PCB and LCD. The conductive rubber repair option still seems to be less hassle to me for the Mk2 display.

I have checked through all the references and still remain convinced that my above posts are correct. There are at least two types of Mk2 display. I have on the desk 4 different types of displays that were used to check the internal construction. These were: 96 015 876 80 96 156 259 80 * 96 178 883 80 96 319 033 80 * Of these display types only those marked with * have LCD's that can use the conductive films that Noz hopes to bulk purchase. The other two display types need the "Polish" type of conductive strips (2 per display) Those conductive strips also need to be a suitable size and orientation (94x2x5mm). I think the confusion comes because the French repair zebra strip is a specially formed long length of the conductive rubber strip being used to replace the original foil in displays with conductive foil strip. My only intention is to make sure that people check on the actual display version they have for repair to ensure that they get the correct items. On the issue of the soldering iron bits these are desirable as Noz's foils need fixing in place with a hot iron to melt the glue on the strip ends. I would not recommend buying just the bit until we know the soldering iron type as virtually all makes of soldering iron use their own size of bit fixing. That is the reason I bought a complete iron with the special bit for the foils. Ken's advert is useful as it showed me the importance of using a strip of silicone with the iron to protect the foil. I must confess that I had not appreciated that there were four variants of the left hand display and previously thought that there were only two, ie pre face-lift LH displays (which rarely fail) and post face lift ones (like mine) which more often than not partially fail due to poor electrical contact between the PCB/LCD and the glued on foil.
Some pictures in this ebay listing http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220796379344?ssP...984.m1423.l2649 of the T bar soldering iron tip being used to bond conductive foil to a PCB. The seller offers T bar tips for different wattage irons so it will be essential to match the T bar shank diameter to that of your soldering iron, or buy the complete iron as John has done. Note the slots in the T bar head for attaching the silicone rubber strip. However from what I have gathered the type of conductive glue and the time/temperature/pressure profile used when attaching the foil are critical in ensuring that a durable electrical and mechanical bond is achieved. For that reason I am certain that the French Zebra rubber sheet is the better option on displays where it can be used. Ok, so maybe not such a great idea after all.
There's a lot of good data on this thread concerning the displays. For those more knowledgable than I on this topic, is there sufficient info in this thread to capture all the variations and permutations? The reason I ask is that it deserves to be collated into a single self-help file so that a comprehensive list of all the info is available in one document. Altough I could construct the self-help file itself, I would need assitance with the descriptions and any photos anyone may have. either that, or is anyone else volunteering to put one together? I see that this thread has not been updated for a time - did this get anywhere or is there or is there another thread I should be looking at?
I'd be interested in anything that can either source the ribbon flex or ribbon flex already attached to LCD matrix. I would expect that the manufacturers would have used some standard components for display and ribbon - my unit is 96 156 259 80. Any info would be welcome - thanks. |
