I recently purchased a stunning XM, it was sat on my drive for some time and the battery went flat, I put in another battery from my other car and now it seems when i turn the key nothing happens, I thought maybe i should press the brake, like some autos and it started, however i now think that was a coincidence as today I tried to start the car and again nothing happened, i tried the brake, no difference, i pushed the gear selector and it started, is there a connection to the battery or is that just a coincidence? what is the correct way to start a diesel auto xm. Thank you

I noticed you posted this remark elsewhere too. Could you please explain?
What do you mean exactly with 'Bendix' and what is the connection with the starting problem? Your response would be appreciated!

The starter is connected to a selector switch which only allows power to the starter when the selector is in P or N...

My guess is the selector CABLE needs adjustment by the gearbox so that it sits properly in the Start position on the Electronic Switch"

I think "Bendix" is the very old version of the "Solinoid" on top of the starter, which these days are intergrated...

There is ALSO a starter Relay behind, under the slam panel, the nearside (UK CARS) headlight, if you peer behind there you will see a row of them.. two green ones for the cooling fans and a black one... clean the connections here aswell...

The bendix is the engagement gear that ran on a spiral sleeve that the the old 'crash' starters had before the days of solonoid engagement, so I don't think your car will have one, although the gear is sometimes erroniously referred to as a bendix.
