Every few days, when I turn the ignition key, nothing at all happens. The starter doesn't turn over. However, if I wait an hour or 2, it starts just fine.

Has anyone experienced this before and if so, would appreciate advice on what it may be.

With thanks

sammy

Hi Sammy

When to turn the ignition on do the instrument lights come on, when you try and start it do they go out, is it petrol or diesel?

Hi Peter

when I turn the ignition on, the lights come on and I enter the start code. I just cannot remember if the lights go out when I try to start it but from memory, I believe they stay on.

It's petrol.

thanks

If they go out, check and clean your battery connections, if they don't, do you hear a 'clonk' from the starter when you try to start ?

I will confirm whether the lights stay on when it happens again. However, there is no clonk sound from the starter when I start. It all pretty silent.

regards

I had a 2.0 petrol that did something very much like this.

It turned out to be the starter solenoid that was sticking. If and when it happens again, try giving the starter a good clonk with a hammer of decent length metal bar. If it starts, you'll know what the problem is.

Aftre putting up with the "tapping the starter" routine for a while, I took off the earth lead to the battery and cleaned and "Vaselined" both ends and made sure both the battery terminal and rhe earth location were clean of corrosion. Problem solved!

Thanks Ken. Did you have to change your starter motor?

Thanks to you too techmanagain. I'll have a go at cleaning and applying vaseline as per your advice and maybe that will work for me too.

No, I'm afraid I didn't. It used to do it so infrequently it was like that when I sold the car.

Sammy, if it's an automatic, you must also check starter inhibitor relay - behind the headlamps (i think it's behind the left one). Mine S1 has the same issue, but the problem is in the contactor behind the key (i have no trouble to start the engine using remote control smile.gif ).

Thanks Sharo but mine is a manual. I've cleaned the battery contacts and have crossed my fingers and toes.
