Hi all
Anyone know where the crankshaft timing hole or mark is on a 2.1 td 1996. I recon I have got my timing one tooth out following a head gasket change. I did lock the pump and camshaft but not the crankshaft. I hope that if I put the two lock bolts back I should be able to use the crankshaft bolt to confirm it's all correct. Only problem is I can't find it it must be hidden by the starter motor but not sure.
Regards
Phil

Hi Phil,i always remove the starter, there are other holes in the flywheel that make identifying the tdc hole confusing.I also use the shank of a 7.8mm drill to locate the hole,a smaller drift may pass in the wrong hole, also that an 8mm drift is too tight.Further proof that you're at tdc of #4 is to lift the valve cover and check the cam lobes of #4 cylinder.the next cam lobe actuation should be exhaust with the two inlet lobes clear. You can also remove the #4 injector (it's easier than the glowplug) and check it's on compression stroke.

Hi Phil

If you bend a wire coathanger into a starting handle shape (if you remember those) you can slide it along behind the starter and if you have the proportions right its quite easy to get in.
