Hi Phil, sorry if some confusion has been caused. There are 6 thickness's of head gasket available from Citroen for the 2.1 ATE/BTE or P8C engine (each of these designations refers to the design evolution -basically changes in the fuelling system). To determine which one you need you must measure the maximum piston protrusion above the block face for each piston at TDC.After market parts also do this.
There is only one repair/reconditioning HG available, Cit p/n 0209T4.This is the one most of us use as it gives no further issues throughout the life of the engine. It is of course more expensive at £70.99p but is a laminated asbestos free gasket and takes account of surface imperfections in both head and block regardless of piston protrusion. robertm PS If reusing the old head bolts the maximum length measured from under the bolt head to the end of the last thread is 151.5mm.The threads and under bolt head should be oiled on reassembly. The engine shop was able to offer me a range of laminated gaskets of varying thicknesses. That's the advantage of using an engine remanufacturer, they have access to specialist parts. They supplied all the gaskets, bolts and removed the broken stud for the water take off behind the fuel injection pump. All in including skimming, pressure test, etc. just under £150.

Thanks Steve and Robert. I have taken your advice and orderd the Citroen HG. Will keep you posted on the re build when I get the bits. I don't know if they are important but when i removed the two spring exhaust clips two washers fell to bits. They looked like a fibre / steel type washer. ??
Many thanks again for the advise it's much appreciated. Have a nice weekend Phil |

The exhaust parts can be bought cheaply via Ebay and I think GSF used to do a set too.

Hi Phil
No, definitly no jointing compound. You should be able to see which way up it goes by laying it on the head/block and making sure all the holes line up. Just pull it down according the the torque figures given and make sure you dont have any wires etc trapped underneath it. Hope it goes well Peter -------------------- Used to have:

Hi all
Put the new gasket on. Very difficult to do without trashing the new gasket. Its on anyway and I don't think I damaged it. Any idea the NM torque setting. I have pulled it down to 90 NM which seems about right. Regards Phil |

Hi Phil
The figures for the XM are: Stage 1, 20 Nm (new bolts) Stage 2, 60 Nm Stage 3, angle tighten through 180 degrees. I pulled mine down until they felt right. Peter -------------------- Used to have:

The nightmare continues!! I think the timing is out I locked the pump and camshaft ok but did not lock the crankshaft ad I can't find the locking hole any idea where it is ?? I think it must be behind the starter motor so it looks like that will gave to come off.
Any advise welcome. Almost at the point of scrapping it !! Regards Phil |

The nightmare continues. After many hours it's all back together. Tried to start it but sounds like its only got compression on two pots. After several attemps it did run but plenty of smoke. When running it sounded ok but when I opened the throttle a bit it just stopped and will not start. The only thing I can think is the frigging timing is out. All the holes lined up on the cam, pump and the one behind the starter motor. Looks another strip down and the starter motor off again. Any ideas ??

Hi Phil, back to basics, check the pining, check No4 cyl is on compression stroke. It is possible the pump is 180 out.Mind that you picked up the right hole in the flywheel, the No4 on compression will confirm when at TDC.A slight rocking of the crankshaft will allow the drift to enter the flywheel.
The bad news ! As the engine stopped and will not run it is possible collision between piston and valves has taken place. This should result in only the cam followers snapping (as i can confirm from a recent mishap of my own - exhausts only). You will need to lift the cam cover to check. They are around £7 each. Here's hoping. robertm |
