My sun roof opens fine but closes intermittently. I know this is a common fault and have done a quick but unsuccessful search on the forum for an answer to the question: How do I fix it? I can see myself getting caught in the rain!

Mine was the same Reg. I managed to get hold of another switch and fitted it. It's fine now.

Demaq when you say switch do you mean just the button to close roof or the whole unit inc. lights? (if so how do you remove it?)

The switch unit is fairly straight forward to remove. The lens unit for the interior lights will prise out with a small screwdriver. It's a tightish push fit but with care it will come out. Under the lens unit you will see 4 Phillip head screws holding the light unit up to the roof. Remove these screws and the whole lot will hang down on the light cables and roof switch cable. It is now possible to pull the wiring plug from the roof switch (It only fits one way) and ease the switch out of its mounting. Everything is just a tight push fit.

It's possible to strip the switch and clean all the little contacts and springs but mine still wouldn't work properly. I had exactly the same symptoms as you.

Hi all,

I had the same problem. After a lot of searching I found it to be a break in the copper wire, inside the crimped terminal, within the connector plug. The external insulation was still whole. Thats why it took so long to find.

Hope that helps.

I know his is an old post but this may help someone in a fix (as I was with an open sunroof!). I've just had a similar problem - the roof opened when I started the car and didn't want to go back. It has happened on Mk1 and Mk2. Both times it was the switch. First time around I got a new switch. This time I dismantled the old one (the body is just clipped together) and found the contacts were filthy. Brasso sorted that. Watch out for tiny sprngs behind the switch contact rollers in the armatures though! It now works fine again.

I had the same problem and found it to be caused by bad soldering between one of the connector pins and the circuit board. (after cleaning several times - a bit tricky to find as I usually checked between the paths on the circuit board when I was searching smile.gif barely visible to my eyes..
