OMG >>> I thought XM's were supposed to be galvanised ?? CX's would have been that rusty within 3years not 13years though!!
With the height corrector above, did you remember the cross flow stack of valves/shims ?? You'll need to measure the head of the brass nut in the height corrector body. From memory what fits *perfectly* to unscrw it is an M7 bolt with a slot cut into it with a standard 4" grinder cutting disc. You will find a stack of very dirty blocked shims and spacers behind this. Clean them in petrol and refit That's some nice looking work there.... You must have a huge air compressor to run the sand blaster. I built a big blasting cabinet a few years back, but my 17CFM ( 15amps @ 240volt -- 3hp) compressor ****just**** barely runs it. Damn they use some serious air seeya, Shane L. -------------------- Location ... Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.

Hi Shane,
I've not yet had the damper discs out of a HC but I think I will now that you've given me the tip on how to do it. Thanks, I'm hoping that all the work will help keep it on the road for a good few years to come. The compressor I have isn't huge, it's just a 100 Ltr tank connected to a 2.2KW Hydrovane (rotary vane compressor). I runs a fair bit when blasting but they can take it OK. On Friday I bled the ABS block and the brakes again, I'm not sure if this has had much effect. Saturday I managed to read the fault codes from the ABS and Hydractive ECUs. Two permanent faults were logged for the rear ABS sensors - speed information inconsistent, that tallys with the behaviour of the car when stopping. Sunday was a good run into the Peak District, the car was comfy but the rear brakes are still releasing for a split second before coming back on again.
So tonight I decided to remove a rear hub and take a look thinking it would be full of grit or metal particles. This is what I found- ![]() ![]() Nothing obvious so I just cleaned everything up with brake cleaner, removed any corrosion and rebuilt. Next side tomorrow perhaps. Steve,
Have you checked the front Teeth.. Rears are rare on XMs due to being enclosed... On the Xantia Series 2 cars, the front ABS rings are common for rotting and splitting open and sitting loose on the CV joint.. Ive not come across it on the XM yet.. I cannot think for the moment what the cause is.. Is it putting the light on? PAul -------------------- 1993 K Reg 3.0 V6 12 Valve Auto (Green) LPG S1.5 SORNd

Hi Paul,
Well that's the strange thing the front ABS is in fine fettle no errors showing (in Lexia or dashboard light) and no strange behaviour but the rear rises up just before coming to a stop then drops again. Definitely the rear brakes being released for a split second. Several Lexia errors for the rear brakes. Steve. -------------------- XM 2.1 SED - RP5876

You have "only" a rotary vane compressor
Out here XM's and Xantias simply do not rust. This is something i picked up a few days ago...... I'm over the bloody moon with it ... http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/attachmen...=1&d=1308465179 http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/attachmen...=1&d=1308465179 This car is 48years old ..... And has less rust than the XM showed me pictures of earlier in the thread (yes I'm incredibly lucky). When my father imported my CX turbo from the UK ... it stopped rusting as soon as it arrived. It now looks like an ugly/oily/leaky aussie car ... everything is filthy and oily on and under it ... rather than the "heavily corroded/rusty" appearance it had when it arrived. We don't salt the roads out here at all.... I'd kill for your big compressor so I could get to work stripping and coating all it's bits that are covered with a smattering of surface rust on that old car. I can't let it get wet, they put bugger all paint on these cars 48years ago when they were built, what has saved this one is it appears to have sat in a variety of sheds for nearly 30years and not got wet! You can see surface rust coming through the factory paint all over it. seeya, Shane L. -------------------- Location ... Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.

Honestly Shane the small Hydrovanes are nothing exotic over here. It's the second one I bought from Ebay last year, if you fall luck they can be had for around the £300/£350 mark. They originally cost thousands but they last such a long time they are reasonably priced second hand.
Ooh that looks like a 60s spaceship hovering about the ground. To see real rust you have to go back to Vauxhall Vivas and Fiat SuperMirafiori's. I swear you could hear them rust. I notice in photos of California there's 50's cars with no paint but only minor surface rust. If only it was like that here... Steve. -------------------- XM 2.1 SED - RP5876

You have "only" a rotary vane compressor Over here in work, we have an idle Screw compressor and Air Dryer, sitting around dooing nothing. The Screw compressor is a 3 phase jobby too... If I had my own work shop Id be scrounging that off my MD... Paul -------------------- 1993 K Reg 3.0 V6 12 Valve Auto (Green) LPG S1.5 SORNd

Here's how small the Hydrovane is, the car it's in is only an A Class.

I'd kill for that compressor !! I was thinking screw type... I've never heard of a rotary vane compressor out here. Does it work on the same principle as a rotary car motor ?? (ie: runs at very high speeds with a rotor spinning ?).
3phase is a problem out here, quite often it's not available or is very expensive to have hooked up if it is available! (then again, once you have 3phase you can buy car hoist and heavy workshop machinary that's obsolete but still very good .... yet worth little as no-one can use it without the 3phase at there house). seeya, Shane L. -------------------- Location ... Hi Shane,
Sorry for the late reply. The principle is the same as that used in the first stage of a Bosch diesel injection pump but with added extras to keep the air oil free. See diagram here - http://www.hydrovaneproducts.com/Why_Hydro..._Principle.aspx I'm not sure about the cost of 3 phase supply in the UK but as you say it's very useful.
