Strut mounts

Hi Guys,

the lump of excrement here just put a strut through the bonnet. Does anyone know what sort of strut mounts a '96 2.1TD requires ??

Hi Shane

Measure the diameter of the parallel part of the strut rod.
If it measures 25mm it is the later large type.
If it is thinner at 23mm then it is the earlier type.
There was a phased change over of types that is not at all well documented.
Mk1's are thin type.
2.5TD Mk2's got the thick ones from the start.
Other Mk2's changed over at various times (undocumented) during the Mk2 production run.
I expect yours to be a thin one but checking is essential.
There was no change in piston diameter so complete strut assemblies of either size will fit any XM but you cannot mix different size strut heads and struts.
This is because the top taper on the strut rod and the matching hole in the strut head are different for each rod size.
I await your next posting with interest when you find out how much Citroen charge for replacements of this crap piece of design and poor manufacturing.

Hi Shane,

My 1996 2.1TD has the later strut mounts for the 25mm diameter rods as John describes above. RP number is 7249 = build date 13/9/1996.

This really is the most ridiculous piece of sh!t design I've ever come across. Pre-PSA Citroen would never have designed something that relies on a bit of rubber bonded to metal to hold the suspenion into the car
