Hi to all,

I have just got a 1995 (N) vsx TDI 2.1 auto - I needed a cheap car and couldn't refuse at the price to see how these sexy beasts are, read around a bit on them and knew I had to try one out, so here I am!!! - but.....I am not really mechanically minded and she needs a bit of love and attention sad.gif

She has got MOT till end Nov '10 and seems fine engine wise (but could be totally wrong - not for the 1st time!!) she has electric/interior issues such as:
drivers window not working - its up but very loose
passenger wing mirror not working
sunroof stuck
dead pixels on dash
no remote fobs just ONE key, which only works in drivers door!!!!
few minor things

Most concerned about door window and wing mirror, so my question is are there any lovely local enthusiasts or recommended decent (cheapish) mechanics who can do any of the work for me? lots of tea, coffee and biscuits provided with a reasonable chat experience!

Based in Sidcup - SE london/ Kent borders

Many Thanks

Hi lakster,

welcome to clubxm.

My first XM was a 95 VSX (but a petrol turbo not a diesel turbo), I really liked the grey pinstripe upholstery.

I don't know if any of the forum members are near you, I'm in Yorkshire, so not much use I'm afraid.

But, if you fancy having a go at the repairs yourself..........

Your drivers window mechanism probably has a broken cable (very common on XM's).
There is a repair kit available on Ebay, it costs about £15 .............

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XM-XANTIA-ZX-AX-SAXO...=item230372d57c

The seller is/was a member of this forum, and I think he gives full instructions with the kit.

Or you could replace the whole mechanism..............

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Citroen-XM-O-S-F-Win...=item29fd67bd3f

The window mechanism has often been discussed on here, so a quick search should bring up plenty of info on it.

The same goes for the sunroof, plenty of discussion about it on here, but I've never done one myself.

I don't know about the mirror, sorry. The electric mirrors don't work in one of my cars, and I haven't got it sorted yet.

Dead pixels on dash? I assume you mean the small dot matrix display to the left of the steering column.
This is another common problem on the XM. Lots of discussion on here about that too.
Some owners have taken them apart and repaired them, and there is a repair kit available on French Ebay.
I took mine apart, and made it worse mad.gif so I tend to leave them alone now.

With regard to the remote fobs, you could probably pick a set up from a breaker complete with the receiver (sits under the glove box and is fairly easy to get to).

Regards,

Paul

Hi Lakstar.

Be carefull of buying a winder unit for your drivers window as the Mk1 winder unit will not work in a Mk2 without some wiring changes, I had to buy one for my Mk2 at £115.00 second hand on Ebay. I have also used the Kit on Ebay from Ecrofting and it is a good kit with full instuctions on how to change the cables, but on mine the motor was at fault. Haynes book tells how to get into it but either myself or anyone on here will tell you how to get to it. And please note, when it gets repaired it has to be synchronised! Ihave the instuctions for that some where.
Most of your other faults will be explained in here too!

Hi Bob,

It's so nice to have helpful people at hand!

with regard to my door window, I am pretty certain it is just the cable, as I can hear the motor and clicking when button pressed, so I'll try the ecrofting kit first off.
Really hope it's not the motor/regulator as im on a bit of a budget (boo!!)

As regard to the synching, is that just if motor is replaced? presume no need for just wire replacement!

Many Thanks

Hi Lakster.

It has to be done whatever you do as if you don't it might break the nylon/plastic slider! It is just a way of working the switch's first off. Roy Mackay of Ecrofting can get new sliders of a differing make but fit okay.
I'll dig out the notes on that for you. Xmexclusive is good with info on all things XM too!

Hi again Lakster.

I've been through my notes but can't find the one on how to sync the motor but this is fairly easy. Get Ecrofting to send his repair instruction sheets with the stainless wire, this details the full repair.
When you remove the mechanism from the door make sure you are VERY carefull not to break the plastic cable end stops as they are not sold seperately and are impossible to find. The mechanism is not easily removed or replaced in position so take great care with it.
When it is being worked on if you connect it to it's power supply DO NOT USE THE ONE TOUCH SWITCH's!!!!! If you do it will destroy the slider.
To get in sync on completion use the up and down switch to move it up and down a couple of times, bring it to the top position then you should be able to work the one touch switch. Haynes book #3451 gives details on how to remove/refit the glass. Noz has a post somewhere in here about repairing the winders.

Bob.

DONT panic about the Sync-ing of the window, its only for the anti pinch.. it sets how low the window comes back down if you trap the window when closing it...

What it will do for the first time is go up in "Steps" to the top, it will only move about 2 inchs a time... once right up, it will work as normal - and if you trap the window at the top, use your hand if your brave, it will then come right back down....

Ive mostly only got S1 stuff, so cant help you with the winder unit.. the mirror though, could be a broken wire between the door and pillar, in the grommet sleeve... though rare on XM's...

passenger wing mirror not working

First port of call is the multi-way rocker switch on console by the gear lever. These often give trouble. They are about £35 from Cit sad.gif I would suggest using a voltmeter to check whether current getting thru.

If not, then motor stuck in wing mirror. You should be able to dismantle, WD40, wiggle things about!
