I believe you have asked before and found that they are rare when used and expensive when new?
Are you sure that the one on your vehicle is not recoverable? Looks are not everything! I cannot imagine a situation on a 1999 model that would require a replacement unless there has been an accident and damaged it . Have the front spheres not been replaced? That is a common cause of accelerated aging. -------------------- Xantia 2 litre HDi Saloon X reg 1999

Hi Yaronagler
He is right that it will not fit. Thought I had posted about the difference last time you asked and said the ebay WHM ones were the small size. John -------------------- An interest in 2.5TD's.

As a general rule of thumb, very few have the small, most early ones have large two hole rams (correct term really) and later ones have single hole
this is a very broad generalisation, but after owning 5 xm's, all have had large rams. same with steering racks track rod ends. buy a tape measure and be sure.... -------------------- |

Hi Lez
There was a further change to the struts with Mk2 Xm's. The strut rod diameter was made larger so the top taper is different. As a result the taper in the strut head also has to be different. To start with the 2.5TD only got the larger rods and unique strut heads. Unfortunately in the later Mk2 production Citroen seems to have used them on other models including V6's. These later changes do not seem to be well documented. If strut and strut head are kept as a matched pair there is no problem. Pistons are the same size so no hydraulic problems. Either type as a matched pair will also mechanically fit any XM. The problems only come when you just want to change the strut head. You have to get the one with the correct taper. Good secondhand with large taper are very rare. Buying new is virtually certain to be more than the XM is worth. Are you saying that the single holed ram has two different tapers? reason i ask is i changed from 2 hole to single, and photographed them etc, side by side, up against each other, in all ways, and the taper was identical. -------------------- |

Hi Lez
Measure the rod diameter on the parallel part of the rod. As I remember the 2.5TD version was 25mm dia. The "small engined" Mk2 and Mk1 were either 22mm or 23mm dia rods. Lots of historical input on here on this item. Noz may well remember. As far as the earlier Mk1 strut change it was just the number of LHM holes and no change to the strut physical dimensions so the taper stayed the same. Only thing to watch for with early Mk1's is that non hydractive struts were set at slightly different angles. While no non hydractive XM's were supplied to the UK there have been a few NOS (new old stock) strut heads offered on ebay recently. well if i find my calipers i'll measur ethem, i may still have a two hole ram etc to compare, i know on my car which was a s1 2.1td, i fitted with struts from a s2 petrol, which had the single hole, and was the same diameter and taper, as I photographed them side by side etc to compare 'forensically' , i think the pics are on my google images page somewhere
