Hi Guys,
I know this is a long shot...... but... I need a picture of the relays that go behind the headlights on both sides of the XM. I took mine out when i took the front end apart to replace the radiator and change the alternator and hydraulic pump but forgot to take a picture of them. The car in question is a Series 2 V6 24v. I don't know if they are all the same on all XM's or not. Thanks in advance. David. -------------------- 1990 V6 SEi Auto - breaking for spares.

Early or late type V6 engine? 24V makes it late (HP20 box) I guess. Paul has an early one stored I think and might be able to check the relays. DerekW will no doubt give you details of the late one's relays when he sees this item. Looking at my XM it has brackets for up to four relay bases on each side behind the headlights but only four of the eight are occupied. Looking at the car from the front and counting left to right: OFFSIDE Nos 1.3 & 4 empty. No 2 is a lighting relay. NEARSIDE Nos 1,2 & 3 occupied by the 3 cooling fan control relays, No 4 empty. All the relays are the same type, ie single pole double throw (5 terminals) Ken -------------------- 97R XM 2.1 TD VSX Saloon, RP 7249, Emerald Green

Hi Guys,
Thanks for that. It's a late V6 with the auto adaptive gearbox. Are all of the relays the same? Some of mine are green, 1 is yellow and there are a few black ones too. All I get when i engage the starter is a click from down at the front. I initially thought that it was a faulty ignition switch but that hasn't solved the problem either. Getting fed up now. ha ha, spent a fortune on it and now I can't even get it out of the workshop. David. -------------------- 1990 V6 SEi Auto - breaking for spares.

That sounds like a starter solenoid not pulling in enough to close the main contacts.
Suggest making sure that the battery is fully charged with good connections and if possible try a direct battery feed to the solenoid. Ken PS If you look closely at the relays they often have a little circuit diagram moulded on the plastic case. Hi Derek,
Looking behind my headlights the relays look the same as that but I have 4 on the passengers side and 2 on the drivers side. Still no joy in getting the car started anyway even with a new ignition switch. Looks like I'm spending my Saturday putting 12v directly to the starter motor. Fingers crossed its not the starter as i've only just put the whole front end back on after doing the hydraulic pump and alternator. There's a clue there then David. Have you disturbed something while stripping/rebuilding?

Hi Demag,
As far as I can see no. I've stripped it all and rebuilt the whole thing once already. When i engage the starter I can hear relays clicking all over the place but nothing happens. It's almost like the solenoid on the starter has died. It's going to be a new car by the time I come to sell it. David. -------------------- 1990 V6 SEi Auto - breaking for spares.

I have the same configuration as Derek on the left side - passenger side for you, driver's side for me. On the other side there are just 2 relays: a black one and a green one. The black one is on the left and the green one on the right.

I found a picture in my files indicating that the black relay on the far left (so in the row of 4) is the starter inhibitor relay.
Hope this helps -------------------- 2000 XM 3.0 V6 24v Exclusive Auto 70k km (LHD; ORGA 8569)

Ah - that is ringing bells. Not XM bells, but I can't see why the XM would be any different to older simpler cars I have experienced. Do you mean you turn the key and relays chatter excitedly? It could be an earthing fault. If there is no or a bad engine to battery earth then it can cause that kind of chattering when you try to start (and the starter doesn't turn). -------------------- 94M XM 2.5 TD VSX Estate RP 6430 Forest Green
