I found this K Reg Mark 1 XM with 55,000 miles on Autotrader. I was interested in views on buying a very low mileage Mark 1 XM of this age? I know the Mark 1 wasn't as reliable as the Mark II

at K-reg it may be a v1.5 (2-spoke steering wheel?).

Besides which, who says the S1's are not reliable!! I've had 3 now, not had reliability problems with any of them. Just sort the common earths under the bonnet if they've not already been done, and you should largely be OK.

Just check it over properly and be satisfied that you're happy with it before taking it on.

My V6 had only done 50K miles on a G-plate (89) when I bought it and it was a great buy :-)

regards
Dave

Yes,

it's a 2 s ..

Wet boots? Suspension goes on sport without prompting? (or is that the earth problem)

On my S1, the random selection of sport mode was the earth to the H2 box. Pa-in-law sorted in minutes...

Many thanks for the views - interesting to get your feedback of your experience with the Mark 1 given its rather jaundiced - and seemingly unwarranted - reputation.

Regards

Andrew

Lets just say I've run S1's for the past 13 or so years and had few reliability problems in that time, recovered a couple of times over that period, in over 150K miles travelled, which I consider to be good.

I use the XM for work, travelling the UK regularly (though not much this past year), and never give it a thought as to breaking down. OK so I carry sensible things like LHM and odds & sods like a window repair kit, plastic Height Corrector linkage, etc, simply because I've had to do roadside fixes before, minor but annoying when on holiday.

Bottom line is that if it's been well maintained, and you continue to look after it, then it will likely look after you too.

BUT, any second-hand car is a step into the unknown, so be sure it's the one for you before parting with cash. Make sure the required servicing has been done, esp the cambelt. Cit service history is no recommendation, they don't do a very good job, most indy's do better.

Get to know a good indy in your area so that you can get any major things done etc.

good luck

Wasn't what it seemed... trade but not through a garage - seemed as if private (very odd!"). "Very nice condition throughout" yet the front radiator grill was broken in several places and a fog lamp was broken and the lacquer had separated from the paint in several places. Oh, well, at least I didn't buy it blind!
