I meant to say the glass off the broken Xantia was off an estate too and actually quite
difficult to find by all accounts so estate ones are worth saving; your estate side glasses are going to be a real git to find - I wasn't happy throwing a perfect set of glass away on a mate's estate but I was pushed for time and the right circumstances to get that glass removed - wish I'd kept the front screen now though! um not close up no
Its ok though i tend to spend a day or so just sort of looking at it, taking the oil pressure, compression tests etc etc to see what sort of state the engine is in before i take them apart, you would be surprised how quick you learn where everything goes when your paying attention and playing with it, i hope , the other trick is to remove the engine with all the electrics, hydraulics, coolant and induction piping in place if you arent going to be playing with it for a while. most of what you see here is in fact induction and crankcase ventalation/breathers which i will remove anyway. Every policy has a glass clause with an excess now and if you have the glass anyway
it can be done as a cash in hand - check your policy and you may be surprised to see the glass isn't 40 or 50quid now but 75 or even 100. I was quoted £40 by another bloke to professionally fit a screen for me on a Xantia right up to the point where I broke the screen taking it to him in a car; I had it sitting on a load of cushions and a duvet but it just takes the tiniest of wobbles or tap and it cracks really easily. grrrrrr Side glass is something I wouldn't expect to be so easily sorted but haven't put the insurance to the test. Put it this way, are you planning to have your red one in another 10 years and expect Autoglass to still carry any if they haven't already stopped stocking it already? Andrew |

All done, now the hard work really begins
![]() Does anyone know why this more powerfull Turbocharged engine has a smaller diameter exhaust than its N/A sister engine?? D This post has been edited by dean on March 30, 2009 09:16 pm -------------------- 92 xm 20i prestige auto (modified)R.P 5678

Show off - some of us have to slum it with an engine crane!
Maybe the exhaust smaller diameter is all about pressure and the turbo spinning harder or something? Andrew |

Hi gents
Well it cant be back pressure, the only engine that needs a little back pressure is a two stroke, a four will only gain by removing the back pressure, unless im wrong It does seem to be exactly the same block, although i need to get it apart first before i can see and it is exactly the same head, in fact you could put the N/A's head straight on and just swap the camshaft which is nice to know because i have 2 spare. I will add some more photo's in a bit but the squeeling i had when the engine had warmed up was a partialy collapsed belt tensioner....................... Its ok Andrew, there was some struggling when i got it home
![]() compressor blades seem to look ok which is a good thing ![]() I have just got to resist the temptation to play with it now untill i have moved later this year............well maybe i could re-build the turbo ![]() This is what i found when i took the top belt cover off, just for a look, the green seal is wedged luckily and didnt get tangled in the belt, phew ![]() D This post has been edited by dean on March 31, 2009 09:02 pm -------------------- 92 xm 20i prestige auto (modified)R.P 5678

Good going Dean.
Ooooh that tensioner looks nasty, seems like you caught it just in time! Interesting note about the heads being the same there, always good to know I presume the blocks are different? Ciarán -------------------- '95 XM 2.1TD VSX Hatch: RP 6429. Rare green ;-)

The blocks are the same casting, the oil return from the turbo goes into where the dipstic hole is on the N/A's and a new hole is drilled on the front of the block for the moved dipstick, the only difference i can think of is the oil jets in the bores for cooling the piston crowns, wheather these could be drilled into an N/A block easerly i dont know, i am hoping the crankshaft is the same but im not sure on that either.
Yes there was a fair bit of play in that tenisoner Ciaran, if it had collapsed while i was thrashing it about looking for faults it would of killed the project stone dead so yes very lucky D -------------------- 92 xm 20i prestige auto (modified)R.P 5678

Thanks for posting the pics Dean, it's nice to see what the turbo charged lump looks like out of the car. I can see why the manifold and turbo are so difucult to get to with the engine in the car. Please keep the pics coming...........very interesting thread Paul. -------------------- 94M 2.0 Turbo Exclusive auto hatch, Green, RP 6552

Glad its of use to you Paul, you can see small changes that have been made on the Turbo engine to ease removal of certain parts and with the engine out it is clear to see what is intended to be accesed from above or below, it seems the turbo is not as impossible to get at as you would first think but as you say still damn difficult

Nice work, love the engine 'hoist'. Strange thing about the exhaust diameter. Since reading Vizards books I've always believed that the lower the back pressure the better (in four strokes). More so with a turbo, the more pressure difference you can get between the in and out on the turbine the better. That said I've read elsewhere that by 'adjusting' the back pressure you can alter where peak torque occurs.
Another point could be that PSA still got good performance using a smaller and cheaper exhaust system. Steve. -------------------- XM 2.1 SED - RP5876
