I hate autos with a passiion..... Having said that, I can't see how anyone that live in a big city and spends all there day rolling along at walking pace would ever drive a manual ..... You'd be sitting there for most of your driving time holding a clutch in or going "1st... 2nd ... 1st ... 2nd ... 1st .....etc....". I only have to go to somewhere like Sydney for a week and I start to go insane. How could people call sitting in traffic for hours on end living ???

The trick with those stupid "learning" slugomatic box's is you must "teach" them to work properly. If the person that usually drives the car, drives like grandpa simpson, it'll be an utter slug.... You need to give it a good hard thrashing for a while until the gearbox learns how to hold the gears for a bit ............................. I LOVE company cars laugh.gif laugh.gif

If you wonder why we complain about the weeny pathetic little motors fitted to big cars like the XM (making them a hopeless towcar for example) .... This is the spec's of the cheapest "average" base model family car out here:

QUOTE

Falcon XT

    * Five star ANCAP safety rating
    * 4.0L DOHC DI-VCT I6 engine  195kW
    * 5-Speed automatic transmission
    * Virtual Pivot Control Link front suspension
    * Control Blade Independent Rear Suspension (IRS)
    * 16" x 6.5" 5-spoke alloy wheels^
    * Human Machine Interface (HMI) with monochrome Interior Command Centre
    * Multi Function Display including distance to empty, average speed, average fuel consumption, speed warning
    * Cruise control with steering wheel mounted switches
    * Single zone automatic climate control
    * Front and rear power windows
    * Electrically adjustable side mirrors
    * 4-Way power driver seat
    * 60/40 Split fold-down rear seat back
    * Standard audio system with monochrome display, AM/FM radio, single slot CD and 4 speakers (total 112 watts)
    * MP3 CD capability
    * 3.5mm auxiliary audio input jack
    * Intelligent Safety System incorporating driver, front passenger and side head/thorax airbags1, pyrotechnic seatbelt buckle pretensioners1, crash severity sensor and advanced restraints module
    * Dynamic Stability Control* incorporating Traction Control and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
    * Driver fatigue warning

Note: 195kW for the cheapest possible base model.... That's over 260hp right ? it's 17,300 pounds new RRP, no doubt you could get them a lot cheaper ..... Now something like the C5 with a weeny little 2litre 4cylinder, or low powered V6 they wonder why it's hard to sell, and the road testers and car magazines bag sh!t out of them .... hmmmm.... You can also get that 6cylinder as a factory turbo (270kW ... there is quite a lot of them around) ... or even as a 290kW V8 ..... Just what the average family man needs to drive to the supermarket in ohmy.gif laugh.gif

Actually the local cars are a pretty good car these days. They used to be woeful. Fuel has dropped way down out here over the last few months. It's back up to $1.20 a litre .... Now there is 5litres in a UK gallon, so that's $6.00 a gallon .... $6.00aud == 2.75quid .... Gee's no wonder we can never afford to buy anything out of the hidiously expensive UK... .The conversion rate is appalling !

4.55 litres per gallon, makes that $5.46aud. @2.177 that makes petrol £2.50 a gallon.

no wonder we need small engined cars... dry.gif

We pay just on £4.55 a gallon were I am as its just gone back up to 99p a litre!!

So we have to have measley small engines because our stealerment robs us of sooooo much of our cash in anyway they can and fuel is the easyest because we rely and use our cars soo much and need to because pubic trasnport is gob shite too!!

Some interesting comments about auto boxes here. I agree with Andrew, they are annoying, having to do 42mph just to get it into 4th gear is a pain, especially when stuck behind people who drive at 38mph EVERYWHERE!

My ideal caqr would be a manual, i dont much favour the autos in any car, id rather change gear for myself.

Although autos do have their advantages, they are so easy in crawling traffic, no need to keep letting the clutch out at the traffic craws along. This making it the perfect gearbox or city driving too.

Although they use more fuel, they can be very annoying (for example, the Xm has a habbit of shanging up into 3rd just as i ease off to stop for a junction) and they often rev higher than a lot of people would like before changign up. Under hard acceleration 70mph in 2nd gear is quite high revs laugh.gif

Manual for me ... although i didnt go out looking for an Xm, it found us, so i would never sell it just to buy a manual version. It has been no trouble in the last 6 years, although after a long drive (when the box is very hot) it does slur into 4th very slightly, but only under light throttle, under load its fine.

TE, your getting another Xm, i must have issed that!

Chris.

Ive just put in the reg of our old activa, its tax ran out at the end ofn jan. It seems it has not been renewed. Another Activa lost? sad.gif

I'm pretty sure that Activa will be a far more engaging experience than a C5!
Not a bargain, but a unique opportunity nontheless. And no, I've not purchased it!

There'll be another dozen C5's along shortly, but how many Activae still exist?

Ive just sold my car so i need another daily replacement and quick! Ive found a C5, ive had a long drive in it, i really like it and i know its been a very good car for its one owner, having had everything its ever needed and im getting it at a great price, id be silly to miss it, as thats what im wanting rolleyes.gif

Still, you can never have enough Citroens, aparently laugh.gif So maybe an activa as well!

There are certainly getting down in their numbers now, its a huge shame, i hope our old one is being made roadgoing again, and not to be seen on ebay as breaking before long. Id have to buy it back sad.gif
