I managed to survive the first thirty or fourty years of my driving life without ABS, as far as I am concerned its just something else to go wrong. Unless you drive like Clarkson I don't see the necessity. huh.gif

I can't say I've driven 40 years without ABS because I'm not yet 40 biggrin.gif

However, the cars I learned to drive in and my first car (a 1982 Fiesta) had no such luxuries. Those I remember most fondly, the SD1 Rovers and Datsun Zs, all had brakes you could use to draw lines on the road and I still managed to keep between the kerb and white line and out of the scenery! Never been a super-speedy driver and the XM has slowed me even more - it's a car for relaxing in.

Thanks Andrew for the heads-up. And I agree with you entirely about people driving within the technology rather than within their own limits.

A J plated XM definately won't have ABS but the brakes are sharper, although maybe a difficult comparison because the one I had was a petrol manual and the next one a diesel Auto with ABS, so it maybe the lack of decoupling of drive that keeps it rolling.
I notice this in my 'other' car which is a TD auto.

The only issue without ABS is if you get into a panic braking situation, it's very hards to release the pedal enough to unlock the brakes without letting go altogether, which obviously goes against the feeling of needing to stop.

The lack of ABS once caused me to clout the kerb, but I did used to drive too fast...

Being a J plate expect it to suffer a few gremlins, especially with respect to switching into sport mode on it's own. Not sure whether this is down to bad earth contacts, so worth converting if not already done.

Not Necessarily, ABS was fitted as an option to my G plate Si.

hello all

just joined as an XM enthusiast although not owned an xm as yet but had a CX

I looked at this XM at Barkers 4 weeks ago wasnt put off by the car but the price the autotrader add stated £795 with 12 months mot, but they actually wanted £1050
although with a valet this would have made a real mint example, everything appeared to work, i like the dashboard style on the mk 1.

whilst i had it running i noticed it was dripping coolant, may have just been the overflow,
defitnetly a good example well worth saving.
