Oh i see. I have had a very very slight wobble when pulling out of junctions, but only very very ocasionally, id have expected a worn mount to be pretty constant?

Thats all though, i have no wobble at speed or changing gear.

Although ... How smooth should the auto box be? on some changes its more noticable than others, mainly going from 1st to 2nd gear. Its not bad but you can feel it change. 2nd to 3rd is its best gearchange.

Could this be a sign of a worn mount?

Well as the mounts get soft they let the engine move more than was intended because of the equal opposite twisting force of the engine when transmitting power to the wheels, as the car comes out of gear the engine twists forward to its original resting place and then as it goes back into gear and the force is reapplied to the mounts as the engine twists back again and this movement gives a sort of judder, depending on how worn the mounts are.
Gear change may be worth asking about, mine seamless under acceleration and deceleration but can be quite jerky at neutral throttling, full throttle changes are noticeable but not that bad considering its not the most refined box in the world.

I wouldn't so much say they get soft but it's the same effect, the centre seems to tear away
from the moulded rubber supports that joint the main outer shell ring that's mounted on the
ally castings. A good rule of thumb is a length of stout timber braced against the bulkhead
and the cylinder head and levered gently to replicate the torque leverage. Basically there
should only be minimal deflection - on a Xantia Activa I could rest my hand on the cylinder
head rocker and rock it easily by hand with little effort!! wacko.gif

Yes, the gearbox is most noticable when not accelerating, under load its very smooth. I supose its about right then. It does get the gearbox oil changed frequently, and with Forte automatic gearbox solution in it, which is to help the changes and prolong the life etc.

Maybe worth me replacing the mounts though, i really need to have a good through check of the Xm and replace anything it needs, fuel pipes are first on my list.

Hi "Hexem"

Welcome to our little "group"

People tell me that it's better and safer for everyone that we are all in the same space, so to speak!!!

Yes, I too think that the "Sharp red pointy thing" would benefit from a set of alloys...

I have a set of wobbly web (Etoile) alloys going cheap here if you want them?

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian, what's your definition of "sensible offers" as I'm interested; missed your post
from the other day?

QUOTE (dean @ Jan 19 2009, 17:09 PM)
Chris

Engine mounts going soft!, the back one causes the wobble when pulling away and juddering when releasing the clutch or on auto's a judder when changing gear, the n/s one gave me a wobbling like with an unballanced wheel when going around a r/h bend and the o/s one can cause a knocking noise when cornering aswell as the engine hits the inner wing.

D

Yup, I had that knocking when cornering that was fixed by replacing the o/s upper engine mount.

Nice wheels btw, just like mine but with about 100k les miles :-). I'm glad it got saved.
